For my third day this week, I found myself heading out to the Santee Boulders Weds afternoon for an evening session. I pull into the parking lot, load up my gear and camera to take some bouldering shots, and head out across Mast Blvd. Crossing Mast, I see 2 boys standing in front of the Donkey Dick like they're looking at the rock. They seem to be looking around to see if anyone is paying much attention. I also notice a freshly painted "ECB" on the boulder. Suspicious... I wait to cross the street and they head up to the Painted Boulder. One stands up on the broken flake and the other on the ground. It's pretty obvious what they're up to at this point. Taggers... http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1482/0008zk.jpg I head up the hill toward them, staying behind the Biscuit and the Donkey Dick as I work my way up the hill. I smell the paint to see if it's fresh. It is. http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/9313/0065pw.jpg I drop my pad and peek around the boulder, camera ready. Like deer in the headlights, they stare a me long enough for me to fire off 6 or 8 shots before I lower the camera, look them straight in the eye and say, "the sheriff is on their way." http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/7550/0021br.jpg http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/9251/0019sg.jpg http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/3686/0031cx.jpg They take off running to the East and I call up the sheriff. The cruiser shows up, but the kids are too far from the road for the sheriff to see them. The sheriff chopper eventually comes flying around, but I think they were long gone by then. Here's a couple more of the fresh marks... (Painted Boulder - note the purple paint that wasn't there in the first shot I posted) http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/5875/0041ez.jpg http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/4000/0057dz.jpg If you see either of these kids in the area, please call the sheriff. They will respond if they don't have emergency calls to attend to. The sheriff has these photos and will watching for these guys as well. Santee Sheriff non-emergency phone #: (858) 656-5200 They also mentioned they would try to answer calls re: illegal offroading in the area, though it would be a low priority. Pass on lic plate numbers if possible. Anyway, the bouldering was fun... lots of people out there! Must be because the days are getting longer. Couldn't stay too long 'cause I had to run off to a Mountain Rescue Team meeting, but I met up with some old friends, made some new ones, and got a few good problems in before I left.

while i totally understand and completely support the sentiment of catching these lamers, i also wonder about the legal issues of posting pics of underage kids on the internet withouth their permission...

Yah, well, they're fully clothed and in a place open to the public (albeit in private property). There are no restrictions on photography in the area and I'm not selling the pictures. If they or their parents step up, identify themselves, and request that the photos be removed, I'll be more than happy to remove them. After the sheriff has a little talk with them, of course.

Twisted Evil fair enough. good luck finding them... edit: altho, from the looks of them and their tags, they look pretty tough. be careful...

Betcha if you took those pics to the West Hills High School, they would probably be able to tell you exactly who they are! Edit, or at least the older one, he looks like he would be in 8th or 9th grade...

That stuff sucks big time. Just discovered about 50 square feet of tag at our local crag. Real fresh, didn't get to catch them though. Anyone know how to get the paint off of kneiss? Considered using muriatic acid but the dirt under the graffiti is also where 3 routes start and am concerned with ropes, gear, people and the environment. Anyone out there ever deal with this in a good way that won't compromise anything valuable, like a life or the surrounding earth? Thanks, Bob

Wow good work getting those shots. The tagging is super depressing, especially when it's done right in ones local area. I'm sure I'll get to enjoy the sight of their handywork next time I'm out. Hopefully they'll be found and at least bitched around a bit. Keep us updated.

I'm surprised the sheriff even cared. One day there were people dumping trash out there (Santee), stuff like furniture. I called the cops. They showed up, wouldn't get out of the car, and even talked to some of the people dumping trash and then drove off without doing anything else or writing any citations. I was sad my taxes went toward their salary that day. Nice work Adam! Hopefully the lazy cops will do something if they catch these guys... Josh

I would imagine that the little punks go to the local high school. Have you tried asking the somebody at West Hills High if you or they can pick the kids out of the school ID database?

That kinda sucks, I hope they are caught. Theres a time and place for graffiti, and thats not it. Those kids also have poser written all over them. Its sad to see an area that out of the blue gets new tags, but for alot of other places I can understand. Example: http://img20.imageshack.us/.../cradletags113ey.jpg (Terrible Picture, but...) this was taken at a local spot a while ago, and shows some of the graffiti in the area. The "disco sucks", "led zep","Burt + Carole", "the who", and all the endless other graffiti gives the place its own unique vibe. Its pretty much all old, and it was actually done by partiers back in the day, not two little wanna bes that are just doing it because they heard the cool kids do. Hopefully someone can get an ID on them...

my favorite graffitti ever: "Avoid the drarft", on some cement wall in bisbee, az. not "avoid the draft"..."avoid the drarft." i'd also like an update...if there is one.
