I have been getting a lot of emails from folks wondering how it is up there. I just went yesterday and here is the scoop.

For those of you who take the Shuteye Lookout road, there were 2 huge trees blocking the road. The good news is I brought my trusty Stihl chainsaw and with a lot of cutting the road is now clear enough for full size trucks to get through. Dorky photo below. The road is a little worse for wear than last year but a skilled driver with a high clearance 2wd can make it.

All the climbing walls around High Eagle are clear of snow and there is only a small amount of snow left to even see up there. We had a great day climbing and non of the routes were even damp.

There is a strange thing going on though. Millions of super tiny red bugs are climbing over the rock and leave little orange stains on your fingers when you crush them. They don't effect the climbing though!

Lots of gorgeous little alpine flowers are blooming now and it is a great time to go check it out. Temps are perfect in the sun or shade. Plan for cold nights...

Have fun and be careful out there!

Grahm

Ah, beware the red velvet mites! (At least that's what I think they are.) The true owners of the rock, as they far outnumber us.

Name a route after them, Grahm!

Wow! Thats a cool little article on those guys! Thanks for sharing that.

I will name a route after those suckers for sure. Something like " Red Velvet Nightmare" They are the smaller versions of the ones in the article and could easily fit in this o. This is the 1st time I have noticed them up there so maybe they will molt and go into the soil soon.

Crazy world!!!

Grahm

Is this the same Shuteye Ridge?
Seems like the Mountain Bikers have the acces pegged...see map below...

Shuteye Peak: From Beasore Road you can access the Shuteye Peak Route, which provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada.

To get there take Hwy 41 north from Fresno to Road 222. Follow Road 222 around the north side of Bass Lake to Beasore Road. Follow the Beasore Road to the Central Camp road (6S42) to Gaggs Campground. North of the campground turn on road 6S59, follow it 2 miles to the 4-wheel drive section which begins at Little Shuteye Pass. Shuteye Fire Lookout is two miles at the end of the road.

Looks like the same place to me.

The road after the "7 mile turnoff" is where Grahm has cleared the road of last Winter's treefall.
