I'll hit the double nickel this year. Started climbing 5 years ago and plan on doing it till I can't, if that ever comes. Have some shoulder problems (impingement) but the sports physical therepist is confident that with a strong effort put in on the right type of exercises, that I'll get past it. It's encouraging to read about all of us "over the hill" climbers.

We all get a kick out of leading on obscure gear like T-tons and camlocks, and belaying on break bars to confuse and horrify the Gri-gri toting crag police.

Yup, I must agree! And gasp! HORRORS! if you dare bring a rack to an area originally developed as a trad area but has since been bolted to Hades and beyond!

I actually had one of the pups ask me if I wanted him to show me how to use a grigri; he said that since I was older it'd make it easier for me to belay my partner...

At 36, I'm the youngest of the folks with whom I climb... The other three are grandparents, all are over 50, and all pull down much harder than I can even dream of on my best day; the 73 year old led an 11a gear line yesterday while I belayed in awe.

Just tapped into this "old climber" forum. Often wondered how old is old out there. I'm 67 (started climbing at 60) and have maxed-out at 5.10s. I've started aid-climbing (I love it) which gets me to places on Big Walls that I could never do otherwise. Also climbed "The Matterhorn" in Switzerland at 65, and recently rapped into one of the deepest caves in the world (Golendrinas in Mexico...1200') and ascended the rope back out. Didn't mean to ramble but I wanted some of the younger guys out there to know that age is relative only to where your mind-set is. We all get there, do it smart.

OK, since you asked:
I'm 62, started climbing in 1963, and definitely feel better when I climb a lot than when I don't. I can second most 5.10's without cheating; but limit leading to a lot lower grades, especially on routes I don't already know well, both because I don't want the annoyance of injuries to my brittle bod, and I have heart problems that keep me from having much in reserve.
I find my technique has gotten much better now that I'm not nearly as strong as I once was.

Hi! I'm 42 and just started climbing last year, am leading 5.9 trad already. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Hey the strongest climber I've ever met is in his late 50's...

I'll be 46 in a month+, just started climbing this year. Still working on reaching the consistent 5.9 level but I am going to learn how to lead soon...

I have two friends, one in his late 60's and one in his low 60's, both climb and try to get out a lot. The younger of the two was featured in an article done in TIME magazine about 2 years ago called "Aging Rockers."

48 this month, climbing since I was about 16. I've got a couple of partners who are in their early 50's.

I recently went to the US to see my family and managed to get some climbing done in the New River Gorge.

To make a long story short, I climbed in an area that I used to climb in about 20 years ago. it looks like I've still got it!

At 50, I still feel great and my strength isn't too far off from what it used to be. I'm in training to bring it back up to speed.
