No this is not a good idea for beginners. You should definitely have a few years experience to count on with your rope work and gear placing expertise first before launching into your rope soloing career. ...Phil...

There are two words in the title that scare me. "self-belaying" and "beginner" (technically, that's three ) No way no way no way!

I would recommend at least a few years worth of good knowledge in climbing before you do this. Read tons of books. If you cant find people to climb with go buy a crash pad and do some bouldering.
