Well when I had my roof rack on last fall, it cut my gas mileage down at least 25% from what it was. I was averaging about 22 miles per gallon in town and 27-28 on the highway..

It depends on what racks, what you drive, and how fast.

For my 1964 Econoline, unsafe at any speed above 55 mph, I hardly noticed it.

For long freeway trips (~70 mph) in a Volvo 740 with Thule racks and a bunch of 12' aluminum bars, mileage decreases by 15 - 20%.

Of course, _Your_ mileage may vary...

I was commuting 130 miles a day at 75 mph for a few months. I took my racks off to save gas, but when I put them back on there was no measurable difference in gas mileage.

So, what have we learned so far? Don't drive between 55 and 75, and your gas mileage should stay the same

My honda crv drops 2-3 mpg with the roof rack on and even more with stuff on the rack. I lose about 5 mpg for my canoe. Thats at highway sppeeds of 60 to 75 mph.
