So, I have an old 11mm mammut (7 years old) that has seen a little action (a few falls). What do you think about a semi-retirement relegating it for rapping off multi-pitch? Visually, it looks like it could be 6 months old. The age is the main thing. What'cha think?

I would use it personally, but I can't reccomend it to anyone else. While I realize that nylon does decay, I think the use it received before it was retired has a good deal to do with whether or not it is usable also. More than anything I would inspect the line for any dryness in the sheath. By dryness I mean brittleness, since as the nylon ages it will dry out and lose its smooth soft feel. I know it sounds foolish, but that is what I look for.

If you want to carry an 11mm up a multipitch to rap with... sure. It won't break.

This could be another troll if you look at it and respond to it in that way. In my opinion you should take it too a rope or gear shop and get them to have a look at it.

As a rappel line? 11mm? No problem - if there is no damage that you can find by hand testing. I wouldn't lead on it, but that is a different story.

I would rap from it, just don't give it any dynamic loads and i think it will be fine.

I agree, while this website does have it's share of Trolls not every thread is one. That's a serious question from a person that hasn't been posting that long. Every one of us had those questions when we were first starting out. IMO I would say a definite maybe on the use of the rope. I'd personally trust it, but to each his own...

"Been climbing off and on for 11 years. Mostly sport, however its limitations have caused me to start learning how to place gear." Taken from the OP's profile. If you've been around the climbing world for 11 years... The only thing that makes this sort of seem like a troll...and not in a particularly malicious way or anything, is that the op seems to list out lots of little details that people could 'discuss' (or argue over if you will). Like the fact the the rope is 11mm...eww. It's a fat rope, what if he had said it was a 7 year old 9mm rope. Or what if he had said it was 8 years 4 months and 3 days old. Plus like others have pointed out...why would anyone want to drag along an 11mm rope for rapping. Maybe it's a completely honest question...which is fine. I refer to my story about a section of rope that I kept in the back of my truck for at least a year, totally exposed to the fluctuating weather of North Carolina...without hesitation I've used this rope twice to haul my truck out of the mud. 7 years in storage...I'd use the thing to top-rope on, but I wouldn't drag an 11mm rope up much of anything.
