Superb research, just superb. I take my hat off to these guys - they've taken the proverbial lemon and made lemonade.

In reply to: At the core of the battle is a widely distributed e-mail from Richard Doerflinger of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who raised three issues. Consider the source......

I really hate the anti-science sentiment which seems to be an epidemic right now. All you have to do is take a walk through their logic without putting words in their mouths. 1) A previous study in mice indicates that it might be possible to generate embryonic stem (ES) cells using a single-cell biopsy similar to that used in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which does not interfere with the embryo's developmental potential... What was already known: you can take a cell from a blastocyst without necessarily killing it. 2) Here we report a series of ten separate experiments demonstrating that hES cells can be derived from single blastomeres. What they discovered: That cell can be made into an ES cell line. They simply built upon previous knowlege and extended the possibilities and implications. People don't generally get published in Nature by doing sub-standard science. If the paper was making statements that were not supported by the data, the peer review process that takes place before a paper is published would have eliminated such statements. People think that scientists are out to trick everyone, but just because you don't understand something, that doesn't make it suspect or evil. Okay, now I'm ranting, so I'll stop. Speaking of ranting, does anyone know what's up with dirtineye?

My purpose in linking that article is that 1) It seems that some of the facts regarding this technology were misrepresented. If you're trying to garner favor, you don't hide things or sugar-coat it. ESPECIALLY in an issue as polarizing as this. 2) Love 'em or hate 'em, the Christian Churches and Catholic Churches do have a major influence.... on both sides of the political spectrum, and making them happy will make it easier to get political support for this science.
