im planning my road trip for after im out of high school so i know how much cash im going to need. as much as id like to leave the US for climbing its not gonna happen right after hs. so anywhere in the us that you love climbing and is worth a visit post it up! so far im planning on heading to yosemite, red rocks, zion, the gunks and thats where i get lost... so lets here some good places to visit for climbing, if you can tell me about the camping as well it would be greatly appreciated jtree isnt on the list because its my back yard (litterally) so i dont need to take a trip there.. :D

Well, in the summer you might go to Utah next, in the winter you might go to Arizona next. That should really shorten the next drive to the Gunks.

if you live near JT then red rocks an Yos should be reguler haunts? when it comes time to hit the road for real it would of course depemd on what time of year and the btype of climbing that you are solid on. hopefully you are well rounded so that you can take advantage of all this great country has to offer. naturaly you would want to do the western half of your trip first and then hit the east. maby Hit up RRG and Twall on the way east? locations in the east that are killer would be seneca WV, Lindville gorge NC, looking Glass NC, Gunks, Adirondaks, noth conway Nh, Acadia ME. thats the short list 8^) More details when you tell us your climbing style.... personaly when seriously roadtrippin I like to keep it simple. Link places that make sense with the driveing and give yourself enough time at each place to experience it. Also like to keep it loose and be willing to change plans. if I dig a place i may stay a week or longer or I may just blow on through. the beauty of roadtripping is that you are free and don't have to do anything at any specific time. For serious roadtripping a vehicle that you can sleep in usualy does not get as good gas mileage but is way better to live out of than a little 2 door 8^) Mini van is good compromise.

i should have posted my climbing style in my main post... i climb trad, sport, boulder, top rope, and will be learning aid soon enough and yes, yosemite, and red rocks arent real big ones on my list because they are soo close.. as for time frame im not very strict on that :D, im going to be graduating early so i will be able to work all next year for sure and hope fully save up atleast 15k just for my trip. and im going to be buying a truck or large suv to be living out of while im on the road. im going to be taking off once i hit 18 if i have enough cash and quitting what ever job that i have. im not in much of a hurry to go to school either so i figure i can be on the road for few years if i can pull it off

My advice is to get a map of the USA and put colored pins in it and rank the areas by color. Then use a piece of yarn to connect the dots in some sense of order. Is the trip one way or a loop? Plan your trip according to the season, considering temperatures and weather patterns: IE don't plan on climbing in Rocky Mtn National Park in May and not planning for snow, and don't plan on climbing in Hueco Tanks in August and not getting fried. So go south when it is cool and north when it is hot. And don't plan on rock climbing outside anywhere the immediate vicinity of Syracuse NY!

The Red River Gorge in Kentucky is worth the trip. Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in Arkansas as well. Devil's Lake in Wisconsin is worth it if you like tradding on smooth glassy quartzite. Red Rocks in Nevada. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. Many, many other places as well.

-The latest maps including campgrounds and state parks. -Baby wipes. -Tons of different music. -Ozium air freshener. -Check all of your lights. Cops love searching cars with tail lights out. -Radar detecter. -Good tires. -Top to bottom tune up. -No stickers on the exterior of your car! (greatful dead/bad cop no donut=BAD.) -AAA membership. -Lots more gas money than you think you'll need. -Credit card-not maxed out yet. -Healthy snacks. Truck stop food can eventually kill you.

I would certainly hit the SE. Given all that you like, the region @ TN, AL, and GA are great. You've got T- Wall and Sunset for trad, Little River and Sandrock for sport, Horse Pens 40 and Rocktown for bouldering. Then you coulod head on up to NC and hit Linville Gorge and do some multi-pitch on easy to hard routes. Plus there is tons of fantastic bouldering in that area, too. That places you in shooting distance of the New and Seneca in WV plus all the many other places there. Once done there head on over to Red River Gorge and pull on some funky sandstone there. Then I'd move hit the road and hit the Gunks and whatever else they've got in New England.

if you do ever end up on the east coast if you started from the south it would make sense to do Tennesee and KY on you way east then Lindville NC from there to The new and then seneca. from seneca the gunks is an easy days drive, from gunks go straight up the northway and hit up washbowl cliff in keen valley NY daks. from there head east accross the bridge and then over to Killington VT PM me and get the tour of Deer leap VT good free camping right there and its a logical stop on te way to NH. 1.25hrs from there you are in Rumny then canon then Cathedral/Whitehorse. Now head North to Acadia ME and climb the sea cliffsgo back through canada and check out the dsport area that they have on the great lakes? dip back down into the states and hit the SD needles and Devils tower. If you started in the north just reverse the itenerary. If you climb at all those places you will be pretty bad ass by the time you git er done

Don't miss Colorado (Eldo, Boulder Canyon, South Platte, Rocky Mountain, Rifle, Grand Junction, Black Canyon) Wyoming (Vedauvoo, Fremont Canyon, Tetons, Wild Iris, Devil's Tower) South Dakota (Needles, Mt. Rushmore) Minnesota (North shore, Interstate) Wisconsin (Devil's Lake, Necedah and other good sandstone) Texas (Hueco Tanks, Enchanted Rock, Pecos River).
