RIP, Bandit: 1991-2006 http://img226.imageshack.us/...6/9934/banditoq3.jpg He was a hell of a dog. Pure bred Siberian Husky, and even at 15 years old, he had a bark that commanded respect from the younger dogs. While his legs would give out from time to time, due to arthritis, he still managed to have a spring in his step when first out the door for his walk. Like the Toby Keith song, where he sings "My body says 'You can't do this, boy,' but my pride says 'Oh yes, you can!'", Bandit's pride would help him make it to the corner and back, and even make a step or two towards chasing the stray rabbit. The other night, though, that pride finally conceded the fight, and he just stopped trying. Still smiling, as he always did, he let us know "I'm done." K and I decided a long time ago that when he stopped trying, we'd put him down. To the vet we went, so that we could do the right thing and put him at ease. The vet tech/nurse was a bit miffed when I took the syringe from her, but he was OUR dog, and I'll be damned if I was going to let some stranger be the last person he'd ever see. If there's a doggie afterlife, he's in a field of snow, running at full speed and pulling a wooden and steel sled behind. He'll sleep at night, curled into a ball with his tail covering his nose. Tomorrow morning, he'll shake off the freshly fallen snow, look back at the sled, and start running again. Rest well, my pal... I'll see you soon enough.

He's such a beautiful puppy too. I'm sorry you had to lose him. I really hope that he is in puppy heaven running around doing his favourite things.

Damn, Jeff, I'm so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful dog, and congratulations for having fifteen wonderful years with him, in addition to knowing when that time was over. While I know you'll see him again, let's hope it's not *too* soon. I'm going to go give my puppy a hug in Bandit's honor.

We are on our third generation of Ridgebacks. Short lives are the curse of all the larger breeds. The older one is now 12 and will need to go in soon for another round of skin tumor removals. His end can't be more than a couple of years away. You never get used to having to say good bye.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Reno. I'm sure he would've stayed if he could, but we all have to move on sometime and you did a brave thing letting him go. Sending best wishes and positive thought your way, man.

That's awful news, Jeff. I'm sorry to hear it. But good for you for having the courage to make the though decision and taking the responsibility to do it yourself.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Jeff. I really respect the fact that you're strong enough to let him go. It doesn't really soften the blow, but my condolences. May he rest in peace. Mark

The day yer pal goes ahead of you to wait at Rainbow Bridge is the toughest part of being a dog owner. Making the decision to takes those last steps with them, and then letting them go...well, you know...there are few moments of greater grief we'll ever experience. And you know there isn't a tear that is shed that you would trade to do it any different. As great as the grief is in the end, it is always worth it to have experienced the years of memories and companionship they gave us. I'm sorry for your loss, buddy. Ed
