Are you sure it's fractured? I had costochondritis last week, where my ribs sort of separated. Took about 6 weeks before I felt good enough to climb again. But my ribs still sort of rub together once in a while in my sternum area. I asked my doc about it, and she said it might be like that for the rest of my life. But at least there isn't stabbing pain when I breathe anymore! Feel better soon, and find a good 6wk hobby!

Ditto on 6 weeks. Actually I think mine was closer to 8 before I could do it without significant pain. That was just 1 rib cracked. Have you had x-rays and verification from a MD? With anti-inflamitories & pain pills you might be able to do it without severe pain, but it *WILL* hinder your recovery, possibly doubling the recovery time or even more severely injuring yourself depending on the injury. In other words, find something else to do until your doc clears or be reassessed near the 6 week mark. Just another note, they used to recommend taping up ribs, but no more as while it may decrease pain it can cause breathing problems or make you more prone for respritory infections and such. Trust me, you don't want a hacking cough with broken ribs.

In reply to: Trust me, you don't want a hacking cough with broken ribs. I second that! I had bronchitus and a bad flu at the same time, which I think made my recovery longer and my whole body was miserable. I would stay inactive, if I were you, until I felt better. When I took time off I found out that I love making jewelry and read a whole bunch of books.

Thanks for the responses I wanted to hear from climbers how long they waited. I did get x-rays and talked with a doctor. I fractured one pretty bad according to the doctor and hairline fractured three others. The fractures are all along my left side right against my spine. This first lead me to believe before X-rays, that my back was just out of place. So after two very painful trips to a message therapist I finally give in and went to the doctors. Its been two weeks now since I found out that I had fractured ribs visited the Doctor twice and have been drinking about 1 QT of milk and eating Tums ( for calcium about 3 times a day). I only feel pain in one rib and some pain in my lower back but it really feels allot better. Lets put it this way when I was guiding many days I felt much worse then I do now. I just really don't want to re-damage this rib plus I am no longer 20. What has made this whole experience a real bummer is I have worked almost everyday this summer and really was looking forward to climbing this fall  . Thanks again for all the stories I just wanted some real life experiences stories to give me some hope that i can maybe catch some rock this fall early winter.

I'm just now getting almost completely over ribs I broke in a fall on August 1. I lived in dire fear all through August of catching a cold or a cough. I sneezed exactly three times in August, and I remember every sneeze vividly. Take the time to let your body heal right... ribs suck when they are broken, and pushing it won't do you any good at all.

Have had 2 broken ribs.. usually just climbed as much as I could anyway. usually meant doing easier stuff and laying off a bit sooner.. Last time I remeber being out climbing moderately maybe a week after. seems they healed ok. However the best advice is wait 6 to 8 weeks ... i guess.
