Cam lube on biner gates?

I just lubed all my cams and noticed that it worked very well on a couple of my carabiners that had sticky gates. Does anyone else do this? I know I can't be the first to think of this, but I have never seen anyone mention it before.

I do it! I've just found that it's best not to lube the locking mechanism on your lockers, as then they come a bit too easy to undo.

Is white lightning safe to use with slings? I like the smell, but I imagine it eating up the webbing... so my biners are often left to close manually.

I haven't had that problem with my biners yet, but the way I see it you only put a little bit of the cam lube and wipe the excess.

I think this might be a good idea, but I will wait and see what others have to say about it.

Not sure what you mean. I wouldn't soak my slings in it, but we're talking about lubing biner gates here. Just let the solvent evaporate. You wouldn't want to get cam lube on your slings either, FWIW.

Clean biners should work fine without lube, lube can attract dirt which SUCKS!

Cam lube is a wax lube that will not attract dirt.

I"ve used graphite for both cams and biners. Most hardware stores have this stuff, and it's the same lubricant that metolius puts in their cam lube, but it's suspended in something.

Plain graphite is a dry lubricant, won't attract dirt, and as far as I know will not harm slings.

I think lube/graphite might make the action on the biner gates to loose and could increase fluttering if one of them unlocked. If you have screw gates, you would want to make sure that you don't lube the sleeve which could make it easier to come unlocked.

I just clean them once a year or so by soaking them for a few minutes in gasoline. Stirr lightly and remove and let them air out. This also makes a wonderful broth which can be used as an appetizer or main course for a light meal...

If I'm not mitaken, Metolius Cam Lube is a wax-based lubricant. Once the solvent evaporates, only wax is left behind. The same formula used in White Lightning chain lube, which is popular for the fact that it doesn't attract dirt.

I think that a sticky biner gate might not close completely, which would be a much bigger problem than gate flutter.

I could be wrong about the cam lube, it's been a while since I've used the stuff, but I will stand by the fact that graphite is awesome, and doesn't attract dirt.

I can't believe someone through a turd at my post. This is a matter of personal preference as far as I am concerned.

Use mayonaise to lube your biners for all I care.

No one is saying don't clean your biners... but there is more than one way to skin a cat. If you want to spend money on cam lube go right ahead.

Gate flutter is a function of spring tension and gate mass. Lubrication should not have an effect. In fact, it is quite important that the gate not stick. White Lightning should work great. Just clean off the excess and let the solvent evaporate.

More importantly, go climbing right away. It will make you feel good.

Too bad you couldn't say more. Specifically that all these solvents have no effect on nylon. They also evaporate quickly.

And there is definitely NOT graphite in Met. Cam Lube. Graphite is black, MCL is white.

They may, however, have an effect on spectra. Not sure, but it's possible.

True that I could have elaborated more .. I was secretly hoping that the populace would check the USPTO and see that the White Lightning / MCL variety of wax lubrication is not terribly harmful for slings .. I just wouldn't go directly apply the lubricant to the 'biner while slung on a sling.

If I were to lubricate my slings .. Teflon will do the trick!

I'll definitely second the graphite. WAY better than White Lighting IMHO. White Lighting does work, and I have used it, but graphite is cheaper, lasts longer, and does more to prevent sand buildup I think.

And I'll also agree that going climbing will definitely make you feel better
