Beer and Climbing?

After a good day of climbing, my buddies and I like to nightcap by cracking a brew or two, or whipping out the whiskey. However, here on the east coast we've been getting some serious hate from other climbers for our uncouth nightlife. We make it a point to distance ourselves from the other campers, but I can still sense their elitist condescension. Please tell me there are still people out there with a penchant for hard drink after hard climbing? Any good drinking/climbing stories?

Send your beer my way so that I can check it for microfractures....

Not everyone on this coast is an asshole. You just need to know who to go with. And it is in your best intrest to piss on the campfires of all those who oppose drinking in the woods. Maybe it's they that don't belong there.

On a recent trip to RRG, one of the climbers at phantasia wall uttered the quote of the trip: "Beer and climbing go together like, well, Beer and climbing"
I don't know where you've been climbing on the east coast, but every time I've been at the Red or the New or Seneca its just been a big party at the climbers campgrounds.
climbers love alcohol.

oh yeah, and if your the climber who gave the quote at phantasia wall on labor-day weekend, let me know so I can give you credit every time I use it.

Man I noticed the same thing last time I went camping on the east coast. We didn’t get it at the time, but now that you mention it I bet it was because we were drinking.

We were over at Camp Slime – a fitting name now that I think of it. These two guys at the site next to us were mad dogging us all night. They kept pointing at us and making comments under their breaths. It really bothered me, enough to the point where we just called it an early night and went to our tents. But it even affected my sleeping, I was tossing and turning all night. After sitting there sleepless for over an hour I got totally frustrated and started to put my clothes on to go have a talk with them. My new lady friend awoke and stopped me from going over to talk to the guy; she said her boyfriend gets like this some times and I should just let him cool off. Fricken East Coasters

The drinking never bothers me so much as the goddamned hand drums that seem to show up when it's around.

I like to think of Kurt Russel with a big ol' moustache...screaming something like this:

"I see a djembe, I kill the man carrying it! So run you cur! And tell all the other curs that the law's coming. You tell them I'm coming! And Hell's coming with me, you hear! Hell's coming with me!"

Sometimes I scream it myself. Sometimes it makes me feel better. Sometimes it makes me feel worse. But it always gets people's attention.

You're just on the wrong side of the continent
The Calgary Mountain Club has always been legendary for the partying and dringing and drunkin' debotchary! Now, it's not just the CMC that does it... lots of us out here are and always have been... umm... a little less civilized, you might say, after a good hard day of climbing. Many late night parties in the Ghost and elsewhere. If you climbing in the Fernie with people from that area, there is a good chance area, or even sometimes that there will be a contest to see who can still hit the target with a 12 gauge. :wtf: :righton: :nono:  <--- Note I do not in any way encourage the use of shotguns while drunk, in fact I recomend against it for obvious reason.

Over all, climbers are still a roudy bunch for social freaks who are also some of the most grounded people in society, Ironically grounded, go figure.

Towards the end of a good day i like to drink a little while i climb. the rule of thumb for when my buddies and i drink and climb is that if you can't legally drive you can't belay. and when that happens we call it a day and finish off our beers at the camp site.

That quote probably came from me, I was at Fanatasia over Labor Day.
I wish I could take complete credit for it, but I got it out of the guidebook. Not sure exactly page it is, but its in the beginning where they tell you where to go to buy beer.

Out of curiosity, both to you and the OP, at what time of the night did this occur? What did you consider "...an early night..."?

funny,

we were at the seneca "end of year"/chili cookoff/etc... a few weeks ago.
since the band cancelled at the last minute we were back at camp earlier than expected....getting somewhat rowdy....music cranked etc....large fire....

some chick from across the road comes over and SCREAMS "i don't like your music". i turned it off for a few, then changed cd's and cranked it back up.

we were camped in a LARGE group, lotsa cars etc....

they chose to setup right across from us (we had already been there) and then bitch about noise. too bad, so sad. and there were plenty of "quiet" spots to be had, but next to us was not going to be one of them.

I like to do a little smack, a little toot, and wash it down with moonshine before I belay my partners. they say it puts me in "the zone"

Here in arkansas, we will probably look at you a little funny if you aren't drinking at night, but we probably just figure that you are with your church group. Not that there's anything wrong with that!!!

I just like the way the stars look after a few beers and nips off the flask! -~

Beer and climbing certainly do go together, I give my strange glances to non-drinking climbers, I don't understand how they do it.

To the above poster who likes to impose his musical tastes on others, please consider that not all of us like music in the outdoors. The difference is that we are not forcing our desires on others---those who listen to music in the campground ('after hours') are doing exactly that.

BTW--I am a professional musician and maybe a bit of an old crab also: I go to nature to escape from man and music.

Please don't phrase it as fricken east coasters. I climb on the east coast. Most of the ppl I climb with pull out the beer when we get back to the cars. If we are going to a campground dinner is always preceded and followed by more beer. You must have run into a cpl snobs or it could be they didn't like your choice of beer. It's five oclock somewhere.

Red River Gorge's Rocktobersfest is my case and point. The boys and I set up camp at Miguel's, and got sloppy drunk (in taste) just about every night...alone. Anybody remember us? We were the Johnson City boys...the ones that eventually got arrested. (All charges were dropped)

I've already addressed this point in a previous post:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/post/1404727#1404727

In reply to:
Well, I finally answered the age-old question of why do we climb. For a long time, like most of you out there, I figured it was just because it was an enjoyable way to get some exercise while spending time in beautiful places. But... like all of you, I was wrong.

This weekend I was taking a brief rest after a long day of knee grinding approaches and moderate trad climbing, while lounging on the rock before saddling up for the deproach [sic] I started to think about how good the post climb beer was going to taste. Now, I've never been one to ponder the meaning of climbing, or life for that matter, I'm generally a doer and not a sit-around-with-your-thumb-up-your-ass-thinker. But, suddenly while dreaming about that frothy malted wheat and barley mistress waiting for me in the parking lot I had an epiphany. The clouds parted and a ray of light shown down upon me, and in the bliss of that heavenly light I realized this is why we climb. We climb because it makes beer taste really really good.

I'm sorry... that I have an odd sense of humor that is most often missed (thank you Pendereki, at least I know someone caught it). Actually I’m not sorry, I’m perfectly fine being the odd man out.

Go back and read my post. You don’t have to think it’s funny, but certainly you can tell I wasn’t serious.

While back I was regularly getting out with some dudes who smoked out and brought cold Heinekins and good beer in a cooler. They were all younger than me, and I didn't say anything to them: figure they can do what they want, but I would sometimes get somewhat nervous late in the day concerning the belays.

In the afternoons I'd still be cranking hard and these guys would be all curled up like weak little wimps and I'd be smokin em on the rock. Since I'm an old pussy by nature and age, I think it embarrased them somewhat. They tapered off the during festivities then stopped totally and we'd relax AFTERwards. They all started getting better too.

My only other recent story involves just me and bouldering. I'd climbed during the day, went up to someones house for social hour, knocked back 4 Whiskey Colas. Decieded that I wasn't fully pumped, and as theres a bouldering area less than a city block away I split and wandered over by myself. Made about 4 easy moves and fell off. Didn't feel it coming, wasn't pumped. Never have fallen there before or since.

Into some jumbled boulders, which I fell back over and rolled downhill.

Hurt like hell for a few days. Couldn't believe it. Didn't feel drunk.

I fell off of a highball bouldering problem after my sister's wedding reception and sprained my foot and ankle. Needless to say, the 4 Wild Turkey doubles and 3 beers didn't help the situation. I no longer boulder and no longer drink before or during a climb...go figure.

I drink good beer after a good day climbing, but don't get loud, and don't appreciate other loud parties at campsites. Call me an arse.

Well written. BTW who had the drum kit at the grasslands the second weekend in October? At least you were a decent drummer, not like most of the drunken yabo's playing their bongos. I think I'll bring my kazoo next time and join the festivities. Certainly can't hurt the "quality" of music being played. I have no problems with drunken fun, but when it goes beyond common courtesy, i.e until 4am, you are simply an asshole.

As for the original post, I enjoy cold ones after a day of climbing. I figure most do, but if they do not that is cool with me too.

A little off topic, but I remember back in the 70s discussion of freeze-dried beer for backpacking. The powdered malt residue etc, a small gelcap of alcohol, and a tablet similar to Fizzies or alka seltzer for the carbonation. Just add water. Anybody else remember this? My thoughts on topic: during a climb, not so good. After a day of climbing, one NEEDS to rehydrate somehow. As Tolkein wrote "Oh water cold you may pour at need down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed, but better is beer, if drink we lack, and water hot poured down your back." Yes, Chossmonkey, I'm from Wisconsin.
