Hi All, I’m not a climber and don’t want to disturb your forum. Just wanted to ask a quick question and won’t bother you again. I was doing research of another kind and ran across this bit of info talking about this penny log and my curiosity has gotten the best of me….can anyone tell me what you leave a penny in the log? Do you call it a penny log? I really did try to find more on it before I came into your forum but just wasn’t able to. ….can anyone tell me the history of this penny in the log? I’ll check here for a reply or my email is jflicker12@aol.com Many thanks, J. Here's the bit of info I found---In reply to: The trail to Tahquitz is steep and sort of loose. Bring a penny to pound into the log across the trail near the top. You will recognize this log immediately. This trail ends at Lunch Rock where packs may be left.

I've been going up there since the time that you went over the log and not under it. No pennys! I have no idea why anyone said that.

Thanks for the response. I just found my way back here...Did they maybe mean some kind of a spike? Anyhow, here's the link where I saw it in case I've gotten you curious... http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/pcs/articles/tahquitz.asp

What is this post about? There's a penny log on Tahquitz also? There is one on the way up to Suicide rocks. Can't miss it. Well actually you can miss it. You will most likely see it on descent and not ascent. One things for sure about your link: In reply to: Tahquitz attack squirrels That is an understatement.

The story I heard was that John Long, a climber who was big in developing climbing on Tahquitz, pounded in a penny for good luck every time he passed by. It's not the log you pass under; it's before that, just above a switchback.
