She needs the following information please... What equipment is needed to rock climb? How do you learn to rock climb? How can you measure how high you've climbed? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sincerely, youaremy sunshine

There is a great book you can pick up at the library...Climbing with Children it is probably at the third or fourth grade level of reading...contains the basic information you are asking for with more detail than i am giving you and pretty pictures too!!!

but to answer your questions:
the climber needs:
-harness...for my children i have a full body harness
-rock shoes...my little one has a great pair of rubber sandals..that work well for her
-possibly a chalk bag

to climb you need:
-rope
-slings and locking carabiners for toproping

the belayer needs:
-a harness
-lockingcarabiner and a belay device

how you learn to rock climb, i suggest getting a guide, that is hiring someone with certified qualifications to teach you....or have somebody that you know and is a seasoned climber teach you. support your actual climbing with reading technical climbing books hehe...and hanging out on rc.com...

hmmmm, how do you measure how high you have climbed...most times you should know how high something is before you climb it...that is how you gauge for rope size and quantity.
but you could have someone other than the climber or the belayer tape the rope where it hits the ground before the climber is lowered then measure the rope to the knot to get an approximate height of the climb ...

but i guess you could always drop a tape measure down from the top of the cliff, too....hehe, that was a joke!!!!

If you look through the forms you will find all that info but i will give you a quick list, now this is going be broken down into 4 groups (im not going cover aid ice or alpine cause it would take to long)

gear for all types of climbing excluding free soloing and boulder:
rope
harness (one per person)
belay device ( one per person)
climbing shoes (optional kinda)
helmet (good to have and wear)

TOP ROPPING:
every thing said above pluse you nead some thing to make an anchor. this can bee done by tying off to a tree, using weebing (slings) atached to pre placed bolts or into removable protection and then ataching the rope to the slings with locking biners.

SPORT CLIMBING:
every thing in the last two, pluse
you will need quick draws (two biners atached by a short sling)
you will nead one quick draw per bolt on the route and then your anchor

TRAD CLIMBING:
every thing stated above +
nuts,
cams,
hexs,
tri cams,
with trad you may not nead all of the stated gear but it is good to have lots because every climb is diffrent and you dont always know what is going to work on that climb.

Bouldering:
chalk
climbing shoes,
crash pad (the more you have the better)
spotters (friends as thing with pads the more people there the more fun and safer it is)
and small boulders to climb.

to find out how high you have climb, if you are on a route that has been climbed before look in the guide book. if you just put it up messure the amount of rope it took you to lead it with usaly done in meters.

i will try to explain aid but i fear i will do a lowsy job but here you go.
you will nead every thing you did for trad, but alot!!!!! more. pluse things like a porta ledge are good, pitons, hooks, and copper heads. aiders (i know thats not spelled right) lots of guts and nearves, this kind of climbing when you are doing it at a high level is dang scary and long falls are going happen. not of the faint of hart or fpr people that get bord easily its kinda slow.

any way i hope this helps. if you nead more help PM. sorry about the spelling, but thats life. if she needs to get some books to find more info, mountinering freedom of the hills is the most complet book i have.

Go to the Articles section and you will find lots of great info on just about everything she needs. Print it out and she can look through it for enough to fill a book of her own.
