I think that would technically be "dry tooling" chalk cliffs. Granted you "chip" your way up instead of hooking features like one normally would when dry tooling. However, its not ice, so it can't be ice climbing.

It also probably comes with a whole extra slew of ethical issues. Then again, it is in Europe.
Personally, I wouldn't entertain the thought of slamming my tools in anything that didn't grow back in some way. Then again, I've never climbed there or even seen the cliffs. So I'm somewhat ignorant of the subject and don't really have an opinion toward ethics.

Oh yeah, Climbing mag or one of the other shitty mags had an article on climbing the white cliffs a few years ago with lots of pictures. Looked sketchy as hell.

check this out: http://www.planetfear.com/..._detail.asp?a_id=568

Not sure of the ethics of chalk climbing but i'd say that axes probably do less damage to the "rock" than a good storm.

http://www.scottmuir.com/ scott muir digs that stuff. As said before, he has done the hardest sport D/T on chalk, a C10+ called Freedom Fighter.
