My son just moved to Tucson and he wants me to go down and climb with him this summer. Which climbing areas are close to Tucson?

Thanks

Cal

Well, I'm not a Tucson climber, but before this drops off the front page...

For summertime, a good close area is high on Mt. Lemmon. Depending on how high you go and where you are in town, say 1/2 hour to an hour drive. Check out Squeezing the Lemmon, in the shade at Windy Point and sun or shade higher up will probably be okay.

There is lots of backcountry multipitch trad climbing down there to get you high above the heat. A lot of it is within 2 hours. Just be ready for some long approaches... Find a copy of "Backcountry climbing in southern Arizona." Lemmon is also a great option for some good sport & its definately cooler up there.

I second (or third) the Mount Lemmon suggestion. That's where we go to escape the summer heat, and the climbing is really diverse (trad and sport, moderate to hard). Whatever your poison, it's there for you to pick.

It sounds like you are from the area. Where is a good place I can direct my son to in order to meet other climbers?

Don't forget Cochise Stronghold.

There's a local gym in town...probably a good place to meet folks.

I live in Phoenix. I would also suggest the local gym, or have him post on the Arizona Partners Wanted forum http://www.rockclimbing.com/...;;page=unread#unread.
You can have him PM me and we'd be happy to take him along with us when we are down that way.

I just started this sport in October. The rock gym in Tucson is Rocks and Ropes on Toole Ave. Your son can also go to the retail store Summit Hut. There are two locations and they always have sales people whom are active climbers and helpful... not pushy. Hope this helps.

Lemmon is the closest. I lived on Grant and First for about 5 years and on a weekend, chugging through Grant traffic, it took about 20, 30 minutes, plus some depending on how high on the mountain we were going. If he lives on the east side it will probly be a shorter trek. Depending on sun, shade, temp, time of day, etc., I wouldn't *personally* climb any lower than Windy Point on Lemmon and expect to be comfortable in the summer.

The gym is fun and he's bound to find a knowledgable local there, although the swamp cooler only works so well in the middle of the summer Crazy. Both Summit Huts usually have a solid climber working the floor, too.

Nightshade, I am a Tucson climber and I always like meeting new partners. He can email me if he wants and I can try to introduce him to a few people. I am a student at the Univ. and know some climbers there. My email is mrstoltz@hotmail.com.
