Well, if you need someone to tell you that putting smoke in your lungs is bad for you, than I'll tell you that putting smoke in your lungs is bad for you. Ever gotten all that resin on your finger from the end of a doobie, well guess what it does to your lungs. I quit smoking cigs a year ago, but I still smoke, and yes, I know its bad for me. I won't tell you what you can or can't do to your own body. I think there's another thread for that.

Sounds like a bit much. Never mind the smoke, side effects (increased hunger and estrogenic effects) could affect your body composition. That said, I once climbed with a fellow who smoked a joint between climbs, and still solidly outclimbed me... The main question should be, does it matter to YOU ? Pascal

New study says thats not true...that "fact" of yours is about 40 years old... Hardly new, unless there's been another one recently that I have not heard about. There was a study done at Harvard in 2001, I think, that de-bunked that one. Edit : Found it http://www.hno.harvard.edu/...10.11/marijuana.html

It will lower the quality of your sleep (decrease duration of REM sleep etc.) which could be bad for your climbing/training in any number of ways, although none of them are permanent. It also temporarily ups your heart rate and blood pressure, so probably not a good idea if you are at high risk for a heart attack, or plan to run marathons and jump in ice cold lakes right after smoking.

other than the obvious lung damage, drinking is far worse for your fitness and training than smoking pot since it stunts the production of HGH

Dierectly, I don't think it affects me much, but indirectly... I can't stop eating. So yes, it does affect my fitness, and not in a good way.

if it feels fine for you, just do it. as for myself : -I can't climb hard when I'm high : even if I'm more relaxed and it doesn't affect my ability to move correctly, it really kills my finger strenght. However, I might have fun climbing mildly high on some easy routes at the very end of a climbing day, better if toproping. -I don't really feel like smoking every day, even if I used to in some moments of my life... I've reached the conclusion that it's better left to celebrate special occasions, moments and settings. But then, if every single evening in your current life is worth it, do it! as far as the braincells trashtalk goes, also consider that years of sustained climbing and bouldering might result in serious upper body damage and injuries... your body is just yours, don't let people tell you how to use it.

i think there are pros and cons to it like anything else. marijuana can raise estrogen levels, dehydrate tissues, etc. however, it is also proven to aid in muscle retention (hence arnold used to smoke everyday before working out), heightens awareness, etc. i think its a question of genetics and how you react to it as well as personal values . bottom line do the research. there are tons of sources that can allow you educate yourself on the subject.

I guess regullar potsmoker Carl Sagan started out with more brain cells (billions and billions) than the rest of us, or he wouldn't have more than a couple left when he graduated from college let alon did further research.

When i used to blaze, i tried to climb and couldn't for the life of me. My friend though climbs harder when he is high. It is all relative. For some people they climb better, others just sit around. If you think you climb better, do it, but for me i just cant

Some studies suggest it's not the marijuana that destroys brain cells but holding your breath for so long.

I quit smoking pot as soon as I started climbing because it seemed incompatible with overall fitness and breathing well at higher altitudes. That said, cutting edge climbers like the Stonemasters and the current crop of dudes cranking high 5.14 have smoked their brains out while setting standards. It's the difference between a probable physical set back (scuzzed out lungs, increased estrogen, & dead/damaged neurons) versus a possible mental benefit (relaxation,__,&__) . Decide for yourself.

There are actually studies that say marijuana helps promote cell growth in the brain, or neurogenesis (the process by which the brain gives birth to new nerve cells).. well ain't that somethin..

If I had to choose between a partner who was stoned or one that was drunk ... smoke away! As for it being bad for your health, course it is. Being bad for the head ... for some people it's true, but for others it's good. Getting stoned and working out, I really don't think you'd be as psyched about giving it the 110%.

I am a stress case. I find that if I don't have some sort of chemical escape every so often, I start being an asshole. I prefer pot and have smoked regularly for 20 years. Is it a physical setback? Absolutely. How could it not be? Smoke, munchies, etc. And I don't know anyone who is more motivated or takes better care of themselves when they're high. And I know a lot of smokers. But if the alternative is being an uptight asshole, then color me a stoner.
