I've been climbing for about 4 months and am just now starting to lead. I took a class up in Idyllwild where I remember them saying that you never want the rope to fall between your legs because if you fall it could flip you. But I see a lot of people doing this. I did my first outdoor lead yesterday and took a lot of care not to have the rope between my legs but it was hard -- sometimes the better holds just happen to be where this would have to happen. I need to get a clear answer....anyone out there that can help? H

Hey Heidi Still hoping we get a chance to climb together in the near future. As I understand it, the issue isn't so much that the rope shouldn't be between your legs but should not be behind you legs. Example (I hope). As you move up the rock the rope is going to hang down from your harness. After you clip and climb above the bolt (or pro) if you were to move to your right the rope could cross over the back of your left leg. If you fell in this situation, when the rope catches it would be against the back of your leg and potentially flip you. To avoid the situation, you would make sure the rope ran down your left side as you were traversing right. My ramble is confusing but the main idea is there somewhere. maurice

I always have the rope b/w my legs when lead climbing, that is where the rope wants to go naturally. Flipping upside-down would be pretty damn tuff!

It's _behind_ your legs, not between your legs. - d.

Ditto Sauron. There are other threads on this. See the Accidents and Injuries forum for one I recently started. -Jay

I have never been flipped but my first lead i took about a 12 footer and got a nasty rope burn on my leg. Try to keep it from making its way between your legs but do what you need to make it up that section. Just my imput - Rock Freek -

yea, just make sure the the rope is between your leg and the rock, not your leg between the rope and the rock.
