I'm heading down to the Linville Gorge in early March with a group for some camping/hiking/climbing. We've never been to the area so we would like to check out a lot of the features. Not everyone in the group climbs so it's not just Tablerock, Amphitheater and the usual climbs that we're looking for, but fun hikes as well (to top of Hawksbill for example). Could anyone recommend any places to camp? I'm not expecting more than 8-10 people so a medium sized area with a fire ring would be great. I read about a spot between Hawksbill and Tablerock with a nice view of TR and off the beaten path that I was thinking about, but i'd like to see any recommendations from locals/usuals.

Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linvillegorge/. They have a lot of good information about hiking and camping in the gorge. Join the group and ask your question. You can also look in the files section to see hiking / camping recommendations. - Jeff

There's alot of good camp spots along HWY105 that goes into Linville. You can only camp in these areas designated but most of them are big enough to handle your group. Fire pits and parking provided. Which ever side of the Gorge you come into, HWY181 or HWY105, you'll find just the right spot. I may see you on the trail!

Our dates aren't set yet but i'm guessing it'll be something like 3/3 through 3/7. It'd be cool to meet up with a local who knows the area better than I do, of course that would mean anyone who's been there once. I've been able to find a lot in my spare time at work, though. Have GPS coords to a dozen or so landmarks in the area, bought the Kelley guide book, read a lot on the Linville Gorge Yahoo group site. etc.

A large portion of Table Rock is closed to climbing as part of the seasonal Peregrine Falcon Closures.... http://www.carolinaclimbers.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=684

Those dates are close enough for me, I can go anytime, as I am self-employed. Like the other guy said, the Falcon restrictions are still in effect. I live within rock throwing distance from the Grandfather Mtn. Ranger Station, I'll swing by there and check and see which ones are open to climb. -Ryan.

I questioned Chris Kelly about the dates for 2007 (because sites like CCC only have 2006) and she sent me the attached file. She also mentioned that the USFS chose to leave NC Wall open all year.

The link provided above from the CCC site has the closures and is the same information that you've attached. In either case, you've got the info... so sounds like you're good to go.
