this spring i really want to build a campus board. i will probably use pvc slopers on one side and alternating big and small wooden rungs on the other. (i want to make them alternating to save space) i've heard that you can use a 2x4 with two of the corners sawed off like to mount pvc pipe on the campus board: http://www.0friction.com/image.php?image_id=16167 i would probably have to use some wedge shaped wood to put in between the pvc mounting pieces and the wall to make them a little more positive because i am putting the rungs and the pvc on the same slightly overhanging campus board. my question is what type of design i should use to keep it stable. all i can think of is a design like an A or to make a design that has long pieces of wood put underneath the sides like ski's. also if you have any suggestions about the rest of the design please tell me because iv'e never built a wall or campus board before.

I had a free standing campus board in my apartment at college. It didn't have any of the fancy pvc action but it did have 3 different sets of rungs on it. I will see if I have a picture but I will do my best to explain it. Basically it was the board itself attached to long 2x6's which was the upright section. Then for the base i had 2 legs coming along the ground that were 2x6's as well. I connected base legs to the legs attached to the board with a triangular piece of plywood. Overall it was really sturdy but was a bit hard to use the rungs on either edge as my legs tended to get in the way. Not sure how this design would work with a 2 sided idea that you have.

when i said pvc slopers on one side and alternating big and small wooden rungs on the other i didnt word it very well. i didnt mean to have them on the complete opposite side of the wood i just meant when your facing the campus board rungs would be on the right, pvc on the left. i don't understand your campus board looks very well but would it kinda look like this from a side view only with the triangle part filled in with that triangular piece of plywood? (ignore the periods i had to use them to space the rest out) .....|\ .....|.\ .....|..\ .....|...\ .....|....\ ___|____\___

Sorry about the description, you did a pretty good job interpreting it! Using your idea this is basically what it looked like with the triangular piece of plywood over maybe the bottom two rows of periods. Also the main wall on the left is slightly overhanging as well. |\ |.\ |..\ |...\ |....\ |____\___

I use a frame with four vertical 4x4's with 2x4's and 2x6's inbetween. I just uploaded a pic of it (with the tag of "campus board"). Hope this helps.

so, dhaulagiri, in that little picture design kinda thing you would be campusing on the left part that is going straight up and down only in real life it overhangs a little? i was thinking that the left side was just supports running down to the ground and the right side was where you climb

I would be climbing on the right side of that with the left part overhanging to the right slightly.

I've been trying to figure out how to build something along these lines; however, I hate the beams on the side that support the thing. Any ideas on a way to hold the thing up from behind without having to drill into the wall?

Not really, that is if you want it to slightly overhang. If I had it to do over again I would build a 2 plywood sheet wall instead of this.
