The Valley of Stone is at the Northern end of the park. In relation to Castle rock, its to north behind Goat Rock, its about a 20 min walk from the parking area. Many climbs there check out the area and list of climbs here at rc.com I will also be posting some shots of the Valley of Stone soon!

i was under the impression that the Valley of Stone, also known as the Lion Caves, has been closed to climbing since 1997. violations are supposed to result in some hefty fine, because it's apparently a fragile watershed area that needed to be repaired. of course, i have heard stories from some guys who climbed there before it was closed... maybe if it's legal again, i'll have to check it out. keep me posted.

I was also under the impression that it was closed to climbing. Just ask one of the rangers

It is closed and it is a hefty 250$ fine if you seen there. I too was under the impression it was just opened, but it is not.

Actually I was just caught climbing in the Valley of Stone and was told by the Ranger that it is a $750. The guy made us pack up or stuff and hike out with him so he could make sure we left the area. He said the area is patrolled daily and if you climb there you will get caught. He said to pass the word around that climbing there is prohibited and it will NEVER be re-opened. If you decided to go there then good luck.

"never" is a long time, but they did put that 'preserve' status on it.

sux the Access Fund fully gave up on this area

CRSP General Plan [In reply to]

Hard to say what's going to happen eventually: The CRSP General Plan does include a recreational priority and a statement of intent to build a trail through the Lion Caves/Valley of Stone area. In the event that the state acts on the recreational priority, climbing could occur again in the Valley of Stone if it was conducted in a low-impact format. You can read the General Plan document yourself and see that the State can do whatever it wants . . . really . . .
