Gear head seeks gear for enormous head....

OK, so basically I'm looking for a helmet. And it's pretty hard to find one that fits, as my head is about 63cm around. (yes, a veritable orange on a toothpick)

Previously I have used a Petzl Ecrin Roc, as it was the largest that I could find at the time. Yet in order to wear this helmet, I had to wind the strap out almost the maximum size (one click from the end in fact). But I'm not entirely happy, because even that looks like I have some kind of novelty head gear perched on my head.

In Chamonix last weekend I tried every model helmet in every gear shop in the village - yet none would fit on my oversized noggin. Mad

I was hoping for a Petzl Elios, style and function wise, but it's fundamentally too small - even in the larger size.

I am prepared to buy another Ecrin Roc, but was looking for something a little more sport oriented.

So... fellow boof-heads, please tell me what you have bought and used. I will try anything at this stage....

I used to teach climbing at a camp in NY and I remember having some larger brain buckets for the kids with larger brains (these were the largest helmets I'd ever seen). I think they were made by Kong, so try looking at their site.

Thanks for the tip kc2lvh. I haven't tried a kong helmet before. I see from their website http://www.kong.it/pr_prot_new.htm that they accomodate sizes to 63cm!

Get Kong Scarab Helmet, it will fit your very large head. Plus if still tight remove all of the padding/plastic to gain still a bit more room.

thanks for the ideas scarab and norushnomore.

I tried the Grivel in Chamonix - despite being a large helmet, it's not a good fit. I guess lumps and bumps in the wrong places. I could get away with it if I needed too - but then I'd rather have the Ecrin Rock, as it was much more comfortable.

I will definately try the Kong Scarab. The Spider also appeals to me. I'll need to try before buying though.

I see from the Kong website that there are some dealers near me in Germany, so I just need to find one that has it in stock.

Thanks for the suggestions guys - I'll welcome any more too! :D

Look at the size of that boy's heed.
I'm not kidding, it's like an orange on a toothpick.
Well, that's a huge noggin. That's a virtual planetoid.
Has it's own weather system.
I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like Sputnik.
Spherical but quite pointy at parts!
Now that was offsides, wasn't it?
He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.

All in good fun. Wink

Big heads are perfect for TV. They fill the frame and so they look better that way.

Just ask what these big heads do for helmets:

Ted Koppel

Mike Dukakis

W. Bush

Alfred E Newman---------and--------Newman

Bill Richardson

Kim Jong Il

Star Trek

So after much searching I have finally bought a new helmet. Whilst in Luzern last week, I found that I fitted inside a large sized Black Diamond Tracer Helmet.

I don't know if it is a new or old model, but the one they had on display listed up to 63cm, and the one from the store room I was going to buy only went to 61cm. go figure. The ones I tried in Chamonix last month only went to 61cm too.

So I now have a new brain bucket.

I tried asking for Dukakis/Bush/Il size, but they all weighed too much.... and smelled a bit strange too...
