I've got a harness about 4years old that is a little frayed here and there, so its not going to see anymore use. Rather than just throw it away, has anybody here ever cut up a harness and made something neat/useful out of it?

I think Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder has a spiffy bench made from harness waistbelts. You'll have to retire a few more harnesses for that, though.

Arcteryx (sp?) is giving people 25 dollar gift certificates for old harnesses in order to run tests on harness wear.

I am sure you could find a place for it in your late night "workouts." Just no FF2 falls and everything should be fine.

I read that Arc-terryx (?) is doing a study on harness failure modes - i.e. they're taking used harnesses and pulling on them (with a steel manequin) until they break. If you can't figure anything else out, this is better than just tossing it in the trash.

If you climb trad you could possibly turn it into a decent gear sling. The Arc'teryx thing sounds like a good bang for your buck deal though.

A gear sling is a good idea, cept the harness was bought before I had a desk job, XS size. I think sending it in for testing may be the way to go. I don't think I can accurately answer all of the questions they had though.

I wonder if they'd take a harness that had to be cut off me :P. j/k - I think that my husband has a bunch of old harnesses that he's never gotten rid of. All Arcteryx too.

What's the turn around time on the gift certificate? This is good timing. I am actually retiring my harness probably this week. First I noticed how fuzzy my leg loops and belay loops are getting, and last weekend mybelay loop started to creak on rappel. It's seen 4yrs of good climbing. Time for a new one!

I don't know what are the forces involved in canyoneering, but maybe you could use it for this purpose (if you have any possiblity to do some canyons).

What the advertisement neglects to mention is that the $25 is only good on Arcteryx gear and they won't ship any Arcteryx to Canada!!! So after spending a bunch of money to ship a harness that had a year or two of life in it, I'm now out the shipping expenses, have no backup harness and in return received a useless piece of paper that I used to light the fire with. Not exactly a good way to promote the company to Canadians.

Arc Teryx is a Canadian company. It seems kinda silly that they wouldn't ship products there.
