WTF Is up w/ my Shoulder

Ok this just started about a week ago. When doing a certian range of movement (ie turning the steering wheel) my shoulder gets this throbbing horid pain. It doesnt seem to bother me when im climbing but only when i roll my shoulder or lift my arm straight out. I at first thought it was a nerve or rotator injury ,but after discussing with people who have had those before they say it doesnt sound like one. Anyone here ever have something similiar. I know i could go see a doc but being in the military i dont want to go that route unless i have no option. They do have a tendency to say you did this on purpose to avoid the physical test.

You should get it checked out, it could be a number of things that are ultimately going to hold you back from climbing, and from performing to standard within the military.

Go see the doc. He doesn't have to give you a PT profile, tell him you'd rather not have one if it can be avoided. Ignoring your injury isn't a bright idea. Most likely they'll just give you motrin for a week anyway the first time you go in about it.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me a few months ago. It started slowly and almost imperceptibly, but gradually escalated to become so severe that i could barely lift my arm from my waist at all. Needless to say this stopped me from climbing at all. I went to a PT and she told me that it was a second degree sprain of the Super Spinaedus (sp?) which runs right down the top of your shoulder and allows you to lift your arm straight up. See a Physical Therapist as soon as possible and the doc'll give you some exercises to do to strengthen the supporting muscles in your shoulder. Good luck.

hey, i'm a PT.

sounds like a rotator cuff strain/tendinitis with impingement. the sharp pain with turning a steering wheel is pretty classic. it's a similar position to the hawkins/kennedy impingement sign.

1) DO NOT THROW a ball, football, etc. likewise, avoid painting, window washing, sustained overhead motions.

2) research "rotator cuff strengthening" exercises, use LIGHT weights or elastic bands to start, probably 5 lb dumbells or less to start.

3) strengthen RC (rotator cuff) every other day, both internal and external rotation. (newer PTs might call this medial and lateral rotation)

4) avoid the temptation of testing the injury on your steering wheel (etc), to see if it still hurts. continuing to hammer on your RC tendons like that can worsen things.

5) if after training consistently for 2 weeks, your symptoms are clearly worsening, STOP, and see a doc. you might have something worse.

i have seen impingements reduce (or disappear clinically) in a single session. however, it is much more likely to take about 3-4 weeks of consistent strengthening.

ps in the previous post, the writer (rudoph luciani i think) said "super spinateus", or something. good guess. the rotator cuff is actually a group of 4 muscles:

-supraspinatus
-infraspinatus
-teres minor
-subscapularis

i have seen more supraspinatus strains than any other, in the shoulder.

I've had this same problem on both my shoulders for a while. The left one started after a ski fall, but the right just started bothering me. I saw a specialist who gave me a shot of cortosone in my right shoulder and is having me do PT much like the guy above you suggested. Mine has only bothered me once, while throwing a football (i'll heed the poster's warning from now on). Other than that the problem seems to be going away. Do like he says and you'll probably be fine. If it keeps it up, the shot might help you as much as its seemed to help me. Sly

First off, definitely seek medical assistance, especially as you are in the military. Being an army brat and once married to a special forces colonel, I can say that it's not a terrible thing for your record to reflect that you have an injury to the shoulder. Most of the time, they could quite frankly care less as long as you can perform your duties.

I am 47, almost 48, and age does change your flexibility, due to old injuries remaining stiff and sore. I developed shoulder problems several years ago paddling and steering a (small, 9 foot) whitewater raft.

The shoulder problems pretty much prohibited me from climbing hard, or using ski poles, so I focused on sports I could do, such as snowboarding, skating and mountain biking. Unfortunately I kept paddling whitewater due to my addiction to the sport and the paddling community. So my shoulders remained very excruciatingly sore.

A combination of taking cayenne to increase the circulation, chinese plasters applied to my shoulders and laying off the raft during the winter helped heal them a little bit. Of course falling while snowboarding made them hurt again even worse but what can you do.

This past summer I stayed out of the raft and paddled my hard boat instead, and also have been doing ALOT of yoga. Specifically, what is known as Gomukhasana, Cow Face, where you reach behind your back, one arm above your shoulders, one arm below your shoulders, and grasp your hands. At first I couldn't reach, but over time, I was able to get the pose. I didn't force it.

This past weekend, I climbed trad with a buddy who is much stronger than me, and I have noticed that my shoulders are improving. I attribute it to the yoga, and laying off paddling the raft.

I hope you can heal quickly, but experience tells me that we of the active adventure lifestyles heal slowly, due to our continuing involvement with extreme sports.

Hmm,
it recollect s me of a situation where I blew a tendon in my shoulder - some other guy mentioned it by name earlier.. The problem for me originated from posture so it is definitely worth seeing a physiotherapist - basdically I blew it as I have hyperextensvie tendons and stand with my knees bent the wrong way, this drops my shoulder forwards in my normal posture and i do most lifting out of my chest rather than my back - hence when i pulled on my back muscles it went.
The good news is it's emminently fixable, the bad news with a change in posture comes a change in balance.. and climbing gets interesting again .. I now climb better than before though (after a period of wondering why i couldn't climb).
