Go to your local climbing gym and take the introduction/belay course. All other information can be found on this site by doing a forum search.

Climbing is different from most other athletic pursuits in that if you make a mistake, you and/or others can be seriously injured or killed.

With this in mind, I recommend that all climbers do a "little" reading/studying when they start climbing. Climbing magazine has a book call Rock: Tools and Techniques which I think is a good intro book. Not too technical and good reading.

And as the previous post suggested, go to a climbing gym to get started. And bring a friend because you will need a partner to climb in general.

If you want any more reading try "How to Climb" by John Long. It is a "Falcon Guide". The routes database on this site will list the gyms in your area.

My advice,

1) Dive in.
2) Go to the gym.
3) Meet people.
4) Buy a harness and ATC and a few locking carabiners.
5) Go out with people to some crag.
6) Learn by listening, watching, and reading.
7) Make it your passion and anoy all of your friends by talking about it constantly and asking them constantly if they want to go out climbing this weekend.

Are you kidding? Mike Barter is, in fact, THE God of all things climbing. Everything I don't know, I didn't not learn from Mike Barter.

Besides the local climbing gym, you could also try an outdoor climbing club. I found a link to this one on google.

I would edit that to read:
"Instead of the local climbing gym, you should try an outdoor climbing club." Contrary to many people's opinions on this site, you can actually learn to climb outdoors! On rocks!
