I'm in the process of trying to come up with a place to head to this winter. I would like to spend about a month somewhere, but am having trouble figuring out where to head to. In the past couple of years I have gone to Thailand for a couple months, and a few trips to el potrero chico. Both were amazing and I would go back, but am looking into new ideas as well.

I don't know the exact seasons for some of the southern hemisphere spots, but Castle Hill and other crags in NZ look awesome. Arapiles in Oz has been billed by some as the best crag in the world Rocklands bouldering in SA looks pretty cool and still in the early stages of discovery. More of a shoulder season place, but I'd love to get out to kalymnos for some thailand style overhanging drippy limestone.

May I suggest Malaysia? Thailand would be amazing! I would love to go with you! If the weather isn't good in Asia in Jan. you could go to the G. Vault. lol I wonder how much it would cost to rent it for the month?

South America or South Africa. Though if it's the latter, you may want to pack some Kevlar in with the rest of your rack.

I guess its even worse to say I really want to be sport climbing in warm weather. I live in the Gunks where there is rarely a bolt to be seen, I like to have a little sport fix once a year.

Dear god man, how do you live with yourself. You're sick. Seek professional help. In the meantime though, go to El Potrero. At least it's MULTIPITCH Sport.

If you are wanting to stay in the states, Texas is actually a good place to hit up. We have Reimer's Ranch near Austin with nearly 400 bolted routes (I believe that number is accurate). There is also Enchanted Rock, a giant granite dome, with some bolted routes, even a few multi pitch. Most of the stuff is trad there, but the bolted routes range from moderate to difficult. There is also a couple easy multi pitch lines.

Kalymnos.. Greek Island with some 1000 odd sport routes I believe... peaking around french 6a in a gaussian distribution, I believe rising to french 8a in the top tail.. some other euro help me out here. It's warm, the routes are marked on the ground (kinda like an outdoor gym) and the greeks are great (as long as you avoid being a rude tourist) Also gives you the option of hitting the south of spain nearby for some bigger multipitch stuff... Oh on kalymons a 70m is needed ... :) lhfBB

DON"T Go TO South Africa!!!! don't get me wrong-the country is beautiful, the climbing is UNREAL but here's the problem----ITS TOO HOT DURING THEIR SUMMER!!!!!! i spent the month of january there. did a bunch of climbing---but i had other things to do to: surf, travel to namibia, pillage the yellow fin population :), and drink lots of cheap DELICIOUS wine. we could only really climb in the morning and afternoon. we spent the rest of the day in the water surfing. NOW, if THIS sounds like a good climbing trip, by all means go. we were also in cape town and all the locals said we would be STARK RAVING MAD if we were going to consider going north to climb in places like rocklands. in fact we drove around that area on our trip north to namibia and it was UNBELIEVABLY hot. way too hot for climbing. so SA is a good idea if you want a diverse vacation (kite boarding, surfing, paragliding, scuba diving, sailing, delicious sea food, delicious wine and a some climbing). we did climb every day, just a little in the morning or a little in the afternoon. don't do both if you are also spending all mid-day in the water----destroys your hands!

If you want a good destination for Winter , go to Potreror Chico , more than 600 sport routes single pitch and multi p. If you want to go to beach and climbing Tai and if you wanna go to Spain Siurana(Catalunya) or el Chorro (Malaga)

I have been to Thailand and EPC. It sounds like you love both (like me), but want something different. My vote is for Vietnam or China. Both would be great places to experience while climbing. China is a state that it will never be again (rapid development). Go before it is all modernized!
