Hi

I'm studying psychological well-being in participants of extreme sports for my dissertation/thesis in psychology. So if anyone can spare 15 minutes to complete an online questionnaire that would be great. As a thank-you, all those who complete a questionnaire have the chance to be entered into a draw to win an Amazon gift voucher.

To read a bit more about this, or to complete the questionnaire click on the link below.

Cheers.

Yes I can post a summary of the results if you are interested. I guess you don't want the full 7000 words? Wink

Thanks for the interest.

You should probably survey people who participate in extreme sports then. Everyone here mostly rock climbs.

Most (most) climbers I know can function in society well enough, but as a general rule, they tend to have some kind of obvious psychological defect.

I believe that ja1484 was being facetious. I sometimes tell people that I am into extreme sports, since I skateboarded for years, surfed the North Shore of Oahu, and now rock climb. However, I see no real comparison between roped climbing, even solo, and say, X-Games events.

Climbing is (or can be, or even should be) a very cerebral activity. Exhibit A: sport rappelling vs rock climbing. Many of the same tools, entirely different mental processes involved. I would sh*t myself if I ever did an Australian speed rappel. Am I a wuss for that opinion? No way. My greatest joy is being the only one on the mountain and doing solo leads on the belay device that I designed.

I do not actually consider technical rock climbing to be an extreme sport, even if I like the looks I get when people learn that I do it at age 58.

Almost? No, sorry, if I'm not 100% paralyzed with fear, then what's the point, really?

Cheers for responding guys, I do have other versions of the questionnaire posted up on skydiving, paragliding, and hang gliding forums.

At the moment the response rate has been better from you guys, followed by skydivers, and not many from the paragliders and hang gliders.

Once the results have been analysed and my dissertation is done, I will post a summary of results in this thread, or put a link up to the results on a website.

Thanks again Smile

I think my most favourite climbing joke goes like this

"What do climbers use for birth control?"

"Their personalities."

Thats just because the hanggliders are either dead or paralyzed (I may be joking but a friends husband who used to teach until 2 of the 4 instructors were dead and paralyzed- one student had a heart attack on a take off putting the kite into a dive before the instructr could deal with it killing the instructor)

Funny thing is how many people consider themselves an extreme sports athlete. Myself, I don't consider there is anything extreme about what I do. I just do what I do.
