I'm headed to California and planning on stopping at Joshua Tree for at least 2 days. I don't know when I'll get a chance to make it back there, so I want to cram as much bouldering in as I can. I'm currently climbing in the v4/v5 area and my girlfriend is just getting into bouldering v0-v1's (aka spotter).
Does anyone have any recommendations as far as classic/must do problems in the v0-v5 range? Are there any areas that have a higher concentration of problems of these grades?
Also, can anyone recommend a good guide book? There seems to be a lot out there.

For bouldering, I recommend "A Complete Bouldering Guide To Joshua Tree National Park" by Robert Miramontes... accept no substitutes.
Great book.
As far as other areas in Cali with great bouldering in that range... ask when you get to Jtree because some spots are doused in snow. Black Mtn. is closed. The Tramway could be open but will be snowy.
There are tons of other options too, but they are best digested (geographically) with Jtree as a reference.

Thanks for the input. that miramontes guidebook is hard to track down out here in colorado. i think the dr. topo mini guide will do for now.
we're not headed down there until march- whats the snow situation down there like at that time?
any favorite problems within j tree you would recommend?

I just started climbing/bouldering last October and I have only been to JT once and didn't get to do a lot of climbing/bouldering at the park, but hope to return soon. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

If you wanted to pick up the Joshua Tree bouldering guide you could always stop at Nomad Ventures which is right near the park entrance.

The Manx boulders have many V0-V2 problems. The Boxer Problem and Xylophone are a couple good V2 problems at this area.

Cool. Asteroid Belt and Texas boulders are both good areas close to HVCG with lots of quality v0-v5s.
