I was at a local rec center with a climbing wall and this guy was doing some traversing with ice axes on the holds. Do people do this or is this guy just a lunatic?

There is a hold company that makes holds that are desighned for dry tooling on. Not sure what company, or companies, if there are more than one. Makes sense to get a feel for tools on rock if you cant get outside to play around. You probably won't see it to often because gyms typically dont allow that because it can mess up the holds, and, I would imagine it would be a liability if the climber were to break a hold or drop their tool on someone.

We have a bunch of drytool holds on our home wall. a few regular holds, a bunch of homemade wood and stone ones, and then some manufactured holds specifically for drytooling. Its good training and a great workout, but it does gore up the holds pretty bad so there's not many commercial gyms that have it set up to allow you to do it.

Woodys Holds is the only one in the US (I think) that makes dry tooling holds. They have some at my local wall. Check out the youtube link at the bottom of the page. Here's the link. http://woodysholds.com/...display.asp?id=17807
