Last night I headed to the climbing gym, like any other Monday night and I decided to boulder. The previous Saturday I watched the SCS National Finals in the same gym. I got to watch some of the best climbers in the world. Dave Graham, Chris Sharma, Joe Kinder, and others were all there. It was pretty cool. Anyway, I head to the bouldering room and sure enough, Dave was there with some other guys from the comp! I have to say it was pretty cool to be climbing along side someone I read about in the mags. One of the other strong climbers (don't know his name) suggested for Dave to warm up "on this yellow". What he meant to say was yellow and blue taped route. It was a V2...just to warm up remember. Dave instead did the yellow next to it without looking at the rating and just as easily as he would have sent the V2, he sent the yellow. It was rated at V7. As a warm. It was a lot of fun to watch them make up problems and work them out. I learned a little about technique and look forward to seeing Dave in my gym for a little while longer; I guess he is climbing in Utah right now. Chris left that same night to head back to Spain. Not fair!

OMG!!! If you climb long enough and you are cool about it you will run into and get to hang with a lot of big names. A lot of them are pretty cool. Some are assholes. They are just people after all. It can be pretty cool to see them climb and learn some tricks.

billcoe, it was almost as awesome as the Mazamas Advanced climbing class you taught (AWESOME ASWEOME DUDE!) I didn't get his autograph, but I guess I will have plenty of time to do so if I choose. Tell me, is it your old age that makes you bitter or your fat ass knowing you are stuck doing 5.9 trad? F*ck off and go rent Grumpy Old Men. BILLCOE'S PROFILE: I was a guide, 100 years ago: 5-6 years with ICE (International Climbing Expeditions) and Portland Parks and Rec. Yes, people paid me to climb. Ahhhhh. Helped teach the Mazamas Advanced climbing class for a couple of years (awesome awesome program). Ran the Portland State Outdoor program for a couple of years and did some climbing then also. I've met and climbed with some great people along the way. Climbing for @33 years and can still get up most 5.9 up to hard 10's now (trad) although I suspect my now lard ass might get stuck in that 5.9 Offwidth-chimney thing on Traveler Buttress at Lovers Leap:-) I enjoy it as much at 50 years old as when I was in my 20's.

Dude you need to mellow out. Your thread title was 'you'll never guess who I was climbing with' and then you immediately follow up with pro name spray. It had all the elements of a teenage girl with a crush on a celebrity. I didn't even get to guess who it was. Anyway, it sounds like you had fun and got to glean a little know how, good for you.

I don't take people jabbing at me well, nor should I. I guess I should have made the title, "Everyday gym experience with bad ass climbers there to learn technique from." I just ran out of Subject space. I guess it would have been a better post if I climbed with Tom Cruise to show me how he did that move on Mission Impossible, but that just didn't happen. Better yet, I could have climbed with Billcoe in his "Advanced" class to show me how to climb 5.9 crack! HAHAHA. Why can't these cynical people on this site get over themselves? Are you just so unhappy in your life that you need to spray it all over this forum? I guarantee the next post will make fun of this one and the poster will try (try being the key word) to come up with something clever. HATERS!

texasclimber wrote: I don't take people jabbing at me well, nor should I. No you shouldn't and a glance at posting history suggests your critics agree.
In reply to: I guess it would have been a better post if I climbed with Tom Cruise to show me how he did that move on Mission Impossible, but that just didn't happen. If you think the gentle ribbing you received here was harsh, holy shit the Legions would be Laughing if you Star Struck on Tom Cruise. "You can be my wing man ANY TIME Maverick!" DMT

Chill man. Remember what Scott Fischer would say: "If you're bumming out, you ain't gonna get to the top, so while we're here we should make a point of grooving."

Cracklover, the OMG comment with the cute smiley face was not agreeing with me. It was condescending. At this point though, I am over it. It was so 45 minutes ago!

My partner, a post graduate, took off for a few weeks living in a van with a pro climber for a few weeks. One of the Petzl guys. He left struggling to send hard 11's, and knocked off a 12a, 12b, and a 12d. Learned so much in that time. Watching this guy warm up on 13a, downclimb and hang draws on 12d, shake out for 5, then make a TR pass on the 12d, all for the 14b he was working on. Inspiring. I just pictured this guy as a buddy, just another climber, way stronger though. Then paging through some shot of the Rendvue at Red Rocks...I see this guy standing on stage with Tommy and Beth and the rest of 'the' crew. Sort of stunned me. Good for you my friend. Happy to hear your stoked.

I tried to get Jack Marshall to sign my butt once, that didn't go so well... In all seriousness though I know how that goes, once I was at the base of el cap and saw some bouldering chump coming my way which immediately got me thinking about how much of a better climber I was than this chump, as he got closer I realized it was tommy caldwell, he was cool but i sure felt dumb.
