Humans are pretty pathetic specimens when it comes to athleticism. I've spent many an afternoon discussing which animals of equal size humans could actually beat in a fight to the death (excluding stuff like 'I could beat up a really big fish on land'). In a race, we are about as slow as there is in the animal kingdom. Ever try outrunning a hippo? Trust me, they may look fat and lazy but they're quick! When it comes to climbing though, it seems like we do pretty well for ourselves. Even the mighty mountain goat who spends its entire life roaming the rocky cliffs would have a tough time pulling 5.12. Squirrels are pretty freakin' awesome, along with other small animals. Monkeys have definitely got us beat. I've seen ants climb the underside of glass, which blows my mind. Even a good snake can climb some seriously steep terrain - without any limbs!! All these animals have the advantage of size, though. Can anyone think of a 100+ pound animal that could outclimb Sharma? You know you've got it bad when you actually begin to contemplate such things.

Hahahaha, I could not stop laughing when I read this. Why? me and my climbing partner had the EXACT same discussion this summer. Wow, weird... I don't think a gorrilla could. I think they are too speciallized to trees, the lack of round holds on rock would probably stop them. I think we came to teh decision that we had other animals beat. Steve

the sloth is the best climbing animal in my oppinion, slow and graceful... and with the ability to hang all itīs life and do all of itīs moves staticly.. itīs not 100 pounds but Iīm sure it could outclimb sharma on trees... but other than that, I donīt think any single animal over 100 pounds could climb even a 5.10

Baboons can definately climb. I checked though, adult males only weigh about 65 pounds. http://www.utmem.edu/compmed/Monkeys.html

You seem to miss the point. Sagan suggested that when we got opposeable thumbs, our brains had to grow by a massive amount to accomodate the new abilities. same with walking upright. We've traded many skills in predator/prey agility/speed for skills and rational thought. How many species can tie a shoe? How many can explain *how* to tie a shoe? You're judging us on just one scale, but there are many others.

more important is in a race up a montain between say sharma and a great silver back. you would fire the starting pistol. The great ape woudl ripe all of chris's limbs off. Put his hand(the apes) on the first hold and win by forfiet.

You're right! Chimps are big! http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/OakViewES/smith/95-96/research/chimp.html O.K. New weight limit - 111 pounds. Sharma has got to weigh at least 150, he's still giving up 40 pounds. I wonder who would win: A chimp with a 40 pound backpack or Sharma. I'd pay to see that at the next ABS comp.!

Orangutans are good climbers--probably better than an chimp. I'm not too sure about the size though. I think they get pretty big.

I'll bet pteridatcles (I can't spell) weighed at least 100 lbs. They could get to the top of an A6 . . . free!

I don't know what's worse, the fact that you people are wasting your lives away discussing this, or the fact that I'm wasting my life away reading this idiocy. Of course, I am taking mental notes and plan on bringing the topic up during this weekend's drive to the crag.
