Is it true that it costs over $70,000 to set foot on the peak? Not including gear.

I guess they don't want any execution witnesses during the Olympics.

I think I saw on that Discovery Series that it is closer to $80,000. Something like 60k for the guide service, 5-10k in gear, and another 5-10k for travel/other costs (Nepalese Hookers). Part of the reason for the high cost is the Sherpas are paid very well. If you watched the Discovery series you know why. "Climbing" Everest now consists of super-human Sherpa's doing EVERYTHING while a couple rich/fat/old tourons fight off death long enough to summit. Then the Sherpa's drag them back down the mountain before they all die. Then there are the other "teams" of climbers getting bottlenecked on the ladders, stuborn climbers refusing to admit they failed and turn back, and dangerous weather that can strand you in "The Death Zone" (a term which I now apply to the crux of a climb). Personally, I'm gonna wait till China builds a road to the top and rent a big-ass SUV and drive up it. If I keep the windows rolled will that prevent HACE/HAPE?

Planning wisely would include estate planning for the 20k type trip, no?

who cares? that place is a shithole and anybody who has enough cash can go hang out up there. i think you can probably do it with a fanny pack. the "summit packs" the guides make them wear just so they can feel like there doing something. i even heard one outfit was filling them with helium sacks to help the losers get to the top easier

coldfinger wrote: Planning wisely would include estate planning for the 20k type trip, no? Actually, you're safer going this way because a) you're on another route away from the tourons b) you're experienced enough to not need a guide c) you don't have as many Sherpas to worry about. It's funny reading comments about how nasty Everest is from armchair climbers who have never been there. Big mountain folks, lotsa room to get away from the hordes. It's only the sheep that stick to the beaten paths.

Are you saying your CTMA permit allows you to camp somewhere else for ABC and the North Col?

Do you know that some hikers and climbers pay @ $2500 to hike 14 days to go and see the base camp. How stupid

and i was hoping that this would be the year that i could finally join the immortal ranks of climbing legends like tim medvetz (the jackass biker from california). what an amazing climber. i mean, how did he hold onto that ladder with a broken hand? wow, that's really special.
