On Sat night I talked to a man and his son that were shot at while descending the backside of Quartz. They believed that they were being fired upon by a fully automatic weapon. Bullets cam within 50ft of them and they had to keep taking cover behind boulders as they descended, only moving between boulders when the shooting stopped and they felt the shooter was reloading. The authorities got involved, but the cops believed the story that they were told from some individuals at a nearby ranch house: That some they were just firing off there semi automatic rifle as fast as they could for the fun of it and they were unaware that they were shooting at people. They showed a rifle to the cops (yea, like they only have one rifle) and the cops believed them. A guy came over and apologized claiming he was the one doing the shooting (not some one covering for a drunk in-law). I guess in Oklahoma a lame excuse like this is all it takes to get the police to go away. Has anyone heard of this before? I really don't believe some guys were just firing at State Park property with no idea that there bullets could come close to hitting people. I'm a big gun nut myself, but I always know where my bullets are going. Even if the story these people told the cops was true, the fact they got away with it, doesn't make me feel safe there, and makes me wonder if they have gotten away with it before. You can fact check with Eric Forney. Supposedly he was there on the front side of the mountain when this all happened and talked to the man and his son.

You would be amazed at how common stupid, backwoods, idiots can be, and I'm talking about the cops too. I've been shot at, and was able to eventually see the people doing the shooting, laughting it up at the guy dancing down the hill with a mattress on his back, and they had the same excuse for the cops when they showed up. I wasn't so nice as to accept an apology that didn't involve losing some teeth though. They're all over that area, AR, OK, MO, IL. I can't seem to get away from them.

My father taught me how to shoot when he was young, but all of my formal training on the proper handling of weapons comes from the military. Nothing upsets me more than hearing stories like this, of people who don't truly understand the power of the weapon they are using. I love shooting but just like with the rock or the water you must have respect for the weapon, other wise it can kill. Weapons Safety Rules #5: Always know your target and what lies beyond it. -Jeremy

What makes this even more infuriating, is that the Access fund purchased this land a few years ago and donated the property to the park to preserve climbing. Climbers and other community members a like, get to climb on top notch granite, but also can hike, bird/climber watch, picnic, or whatever, all for no charge. Climbers can enjoy a little bit of Jtree right in the mid-west and other park users have a beautiful place to spend the day on flat ground and watch the soaring hawks. The state park had this truly magical place donated to them (paid for by climbers) and this is the type of protection park visitors are afforded.

it's crazy how oblivious some people are. some jack ass in the wind river range dropped a big rock off the rim of a canyon last year. i guess he didn't realize that there were two guys half way up the wall. it hit one of them in the head and killed him instantly. what a waste. i carry a .45 with a 13 round mag whenever i'm in the backcountry. it's for animal protection, but you better believe i'd use it on a redneck if he was shooting at me. happy hunting

I'm glad my post has sparked such a high level of intellectual discourse. To me this issue isn't about international conflicts or gun rights or whatever. I just want to know if this is a systemic problem at Quartz and if it is, then perhaps an organized effort could do something about it. The original land owner, Ted Johnson, allowed people to climb on his property for years, evidently by the threat of a lawsuit. Now that he is gone and the property is owned by a state park, we have to put up with this intimidation by one of his old neighbors. I think as a climbing community in a free nation we can do better than this.

But just think Joseph, this way if we ever decide we want Canada, it will be easily obtained. Three cheers for the Second Amendment. p.s. Are you allowed to make a statement like that and still reside in California?

I assure you some time in the Federal pokie. It IS within the ability of law enforcement to stop morons from firing weapons in public areas. Its their duty as well. Sheesh! DMT

I don't think this is a frequent or reocurring problem at Quartz. I've been climbing routinely at quartz since 1977 and I have never been shot at, or heard of a problem like this before now. Since we have family that live in Altus, we typically climb at quartz about once a month.

...I'm so glad I don't live around imbred rednecks all tanked up off their own moonshine firing weapons blindly. ...I just live around a bunch of crackheads that will shoot me point blank if I wear too much blue or red. Ahhh, what a world. I guess it's all relative
