WTF is up with his socks? Do people (other than total n00bs) really wear socks under their shoes. There is definately something not right about that photo.

yeah....we've established that the camera angle gives the illusion of overhanging. The shape of the protrusion does not look natural. The bolt next to the crack isn't even being used...what a waste of a perfectly good bolt. Anyone recognize that model harness? At least he's executing "The Right to Bare Armz"......lameness

I saw your comment on the photo about people living below the cliffs so I guess that does make sense. Still...a very odd sight to see while out climbing I'm sure. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

I had to contact my company's QA/QC/testing department on this one. According to my experts, unless the have some new type of cement (concrete) in Brazil (hey they invented the thong...) then that is definately not a retaining structure. In the mining industry we use roof bolts to keep rock in place...but this is a preformed structure (cast somewhere else and placed on side of cliff for some reason). And even roof bolts would not hold that flake in place. What I'd really like to know is what is holding that concrete in place?

Rotate the picture clockwise 90 deg. It makes the chalk-bag and sling hang straight, and the concrete block then looks as though it belongs there as a base for something. Is this picture a wind-up?

As far as I understand it is a very long iron or steel "bolt" placed deep in the rock and the cement is just around the exit point of the "bolt" in order to make a less harmfull shape in case of a fall on top of it. Some times I see the similar things where rocks were demolished to open room for a road or something like it. If you are interested I can take more pics of this and other structures with the same purpose aroud the city. And we talk about it in private. This forum is to make fun of the poor angle and clear noobness of the picture!

What's wrong with wearing socks with your shoes? haven't you ever climbed in the winter before? Maybe not...maybe you're one of them fair weather climbers. I bet you go to the gym when it's below 50 degrees don't you? And you need to pick up a chick there, so wearing socks would really decrease your odds of that happeneing. And when you do go outside you're waaay more concerned about looking cool than anything else. You think Kelly Cordes didn't wear socks when they did their Shipton Spire route?? Seriously...that was one of the lamest comments I have ever read on this lame website. So your tag is WVUclmbr. What are you in college or something? So you must be like 20...maybe 21 years old? How long have you been climbing? Let me give you a little hint.....people who use the word noob.......are usually beginners themselves. How about just getting out to climb instead of picking apart the clothes someone else wears. RR

I've seen similar stuff on roadside walls, where they cut a hill to make a path for the road. I think they hold pipes for draining the water out of a cliff so that it doesn't collapse onto the road. However, from what I've seen, in every case the whole cliff is covered with concrete. Or maybe that's concrete he's climbing on... or maybe my head is playing games with me and I've never seen such a thing...
