While sitting at home recuperating from my hip replacement, I discovered that Failure To Launch, the adventure sports/romantic comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey, was on almost every single day. It is cute, and it got the access road to Sand Rock paved. However, it is a terrible example of climbing. I played the freeze-frame button like a virtuoso to examine the scene. Here are some of the low-lights... Main character "Trip" is depressed and his two buddies, "Demo" and "Ace" talk him into going climbing at Sand Rock (not named in the movie). We cut to Holiday Block where Trip is clipping bolts on Kennel Club while being belayed by Demo. Climbing along side of Trip, Ace is clearly on an unnamed warmup route on the top rope side of Jaws Block. A close-up of Ace shows a well known crown-shaped horn from a TR or trad route next to a pine tree about 50' to the left of the concrete pad. Demo is belaying Trip, but who is belaying Ace? There are only three guys climbing and talking to each other, apparently on the same crag through camera magic. Actually, no one was belaying anyone. Demo is eating carrots and talking. Trip asks for slack, so Demo reels out about 15', calls, "On belay!" and drops the rope to reach for something else to eat. Trip, apparently about 40' up Kennel Club, is bitten by a lizard and comes off. Demo is somehow snatched up like the Second Coming, but his hands are off the rope. Trip eventually decks in a cloud of leaves and Demo is hanging about 15' up, eating a carrot. OK, it is ridiculous, but non-climbers won't recognize the impossibilities in the scene. There is even a mild rebuke of Demo by Trip, "Didn't you just drop me from 40 feet?" Does anyone know of a movie with accurate technical rock climbing scenes?

Touching the void seemed pretty accurate to me as far as a movie can be... There were some liberties regarding the vintage of the gear used vs. when the action is supposed to be taking place, but nothing major.
