That knot looks horrible. A sloppy knot will yield poor results. Hand tighten the knot and this will not happen. The knot will behave fine.

are you 100% sure ?

What is the point man? That our knots may move around a bit on a fall? I'm not worried, it will still hold, plus falls don't put that kind of tension on a knot, your machine puts a constant pulling on the knot, not a sudden jerk. As for me, I just climb with a clove hitch, that seems to be working fine for me.

I agree, I think. Are these knots dressed properly before you start pulling? The pink rope does not appear to be, and it is hard to tell from the pics of the other rope.

I have fallen on, and even used one to pull stumps out of my yard and cars out of snow and never had this happen with an 8.

On a side note, I even got the 8 to untie after pulling the car out of snow the other day.
NO, BOTH are incorrect. The black one is not EVENLY TIGHTENED, though the strands do run parallel. THE PINK ONE IS CRAP ON BOTH COUNTS. Blush And yes, a PROPERLEY DRESSED 8 will untie most easily. Stop building retarded machines, and go learn how to properly tie knots. f spell check, I need to add a couple of cats to my do not climb w/ list before i forget.

So all this is to say the doubled Figure 8 knot holds?

Thanks, Magic.

it means its bulk is redundant to the mechanical operational value we need in our tying in

this is an advertisment for the genius of the overhand knots

The intention was not to criticize the fig 8 knot but to understand how the internal movement of the rope under tension effects the fig 8 knot dressing .
