I have both a grigri and an atc and i prefer the atc, anywhere, any time

but i don't have anything against people using grigri's, they're a fine tool in the right hands...

You're about as involved in the start of the Gri Gri debate as Al Gore was in the creation of the internet.

He didn't start the fire. It was always burning since the world's been turning. He didn't start the fire. We tried to fight though we didn't light it.

I voted for the first option. Notice the difference in the responses between the climbing levels. Those that climb harder seem to have a higher percentage that like Gri-Gri's than those that don't.

FWIW, attend an AMGA class and you will hear the Gri-Gri referred to as "the device of choice" on a few occasions.

Edited to add: I am guessing that Majid is in the last category

Al Gore initiated initiatives that led to setting up the internet (or something like that).

It was my understanding that the military "invented" the internet....not sure how Al fit in there....probably pushed funding through with no idea if it was for missles or the tubes the internet is made of.
Who invented rc.com? Did you know there are people who climb that have never heard of rockclimbing.com? How do they know how to do climbing stuff or what gear they should buy?

I'm pretty sure the first 'internet' was set up to share data between observatories and their users. That's why netscape always had the telescope/sky themes.

I'm too lazy to search for the true origins. It's more fun to speculate.

not even close

The school and universities were the first who came up with the idea of using phone/ modem to send data . in 1983 while I was living in France, the French were offering a small b/w terminal that looked like a small laptop with a small on-board keyboard. back then , you use that machine to check the train ticket, airline ticket and so many other things.

KABBOOONG
That happened to a good friend of mine (no pun). He picked up some girl at a non-climbing gym, took her on their first date to a choss heap, and got dropped exactly like that.

Of course no belay device would have made up for him concentrating too hard on the girl on not hard enough on the training and maybe some practice. Good think he only fell 15 feet onto soft sand.

On the other hand, I get belayed by this old guy, 60+, and I'm confident in his skill but not in his strength. I like that gri gri in his hands.

Like all 10,000+ threads on the gri gri vs. the world, use any tool wrong and your screwed. Use it right and it's just as good as the rest for what it's designed for.

I though you could vote for more than one option. Anyway, I put myself down for the first, but would like to vote for #1 and #2.

I like for sport, aid, and rigging, but I dislike for trad.

Suppose you love your Cinch, but are only so-so about the Gri gri, and climb 5.10 + trad? Which button gets clicked?

Good point Billcoe. Gotta remember though that this is the interweb, it doesn't correspond in any way, shape or form to reality.

Most of the Ninja badboys here have claimed 5.12. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. You say you climb 5.10+ trad? Respect.

edited to add: I like grigris, they ADD safety when used properly with inexperienced TRers, though for sport or trad I'll take the ATC-guide or B52.

Your KABBOOONG may vary.

You guys are speaking of the internet as if there's only one... as far as our commander in chief is concerned there are multiple internets... which still begs the question: where did they all come from? Tongue
