There was a ground fall in the gunks today off of Pink Laurel. I only have hearsay, since all I saw was the aftermath, but apparently the climber fell from the upper part of the first pitch, striking the belayer who got fairly bloodied up from it all. Anyone have any actual details?

I should also say that it appeared that both climbers would be fine, in the long run. The first responders apparently considered the fallen climber to be stable enough to 'cancel the medivac'. Of course, that means it was bad enough to think a medivac was necessary in the first place, but I am pretty sure this is not an obituary.

There is good gear all over the place on Pink Laurel. Scary to think that someone could deck from near the top of P1. Curious to hear the details. Best wishes to those involved, for a full and speedy recovery. ~Kevin

I saw the guy on the back of the truck. He looked calm, alert and in reasonably good shape. The rumor was that he fell 30 fit to the deck on City Lights, not Pink Laurel. I hope he is ok.

That makes a bit more sense. Falling from about 30 feet on City Lights would put you at the slightly run out section. Good to hear that he is in reasonably good shape. Thanks. ~Kevin

I was at the gunks on friday and arrived soon after the accident occurred. I helped in the evac along with many many other climbers, rangers and EMTs. Since I can't claim to know all the details I will try to refrain on speculating. However the climb was definitely Pink Laurel not City Lights and it was a ground fall onto his belayer.

Oy! Hope the injured party is okay. Most people (myself included) run out the initial ramp up to the cave. If you fell there, you'd be back on your belayer. There's all kinds of bombproof gear at the cave. Out of the cave is cruxy and continues to be so for a while; I can also see where one might pump out and try to climb to saftey. A fall from high up in that corner might also eventually land you on your belayer ... but probably with a bump on the ramp first. Past that, though, it's easy and good gear. So here's hoping the fall wasn't that long.

The Gunks is prone to 'alot' of accidents because of the nature of the rock and the amount of pro. the Gunks are a very good place for new leaders to practice and hone their skills. however at times there is still no excuse for dumb mistakes. (not pointing any fingers)
