My friend found an old 11mm rope in his storage garage that didn't show any signs of wear when we looked over it, however when I was being lowered off the warm-up route I could see lines of thread and a few suspicious looking marks on the rope. I got down alive but our day was abruptly ended on account of the unknown condition of the rope. Does anyone have any advice on how to check a rope for micro-tears, lacerations, stressed areas and other damages?

If you don't feel safe climbing on it or have questions about its safety, don't climb on it and retire it. just my two cents

Retire. Too many unknown. Not worth saving 120$ (or however much the cheapest 11mm is nowadays.)

if you have to ask then the answer should be obvious. don't use it. would you really feel safer climbing on it because some people on the internet said it's ok?

Having no knowledge of it's age or history... toss it. It being 11mm is probably a fair indication of the age. Very few 11mm ropes have been sold in the last 15 years.

Toss it, make it a bathroom rug, use it to tow a car, use it to pull down a tree, just don't use it for climbing. If the value of your life is under $200 bucks then go ahead, but I'm sure you and your family wouldn't set that price tag that low!!

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was asking for ways to check if its okay, not if it was okay.

jacob80304 wrote: Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was asking for ways to check if its okay, not if it was okay. the only way to 100% check if it's ok is to break it under controlled conditions. What good is that going to do for you? Sure, it may look fine on the outside, but what about the stuff you can't see? If I were you, I'd listen to SterlingJim. He knows of what he speaks, as building ropes is what he does.
