It is possible to have a larger climber and a smaller belayer. I outweigh my belayer by 100 pounds. we do fine.

I'm 6'2 and 140 lbs and practically knock my teeth out with any overzealous footwork... the weight's totally a huge factor, lighter people climb easier, it's physics... i'm convinced the road to climbing 5.12 is anorexia

There's a newbie at my gym who is absolutely huge (gotta be 5'5" 220lbs), and she keeps coming back. Good for her I say.

Lighter people may climb easier but not better. My regular climbing partner is around 100 pounds lighter than me and we don't have problems. (I’m 6’-2” and 235 lbs.) Rope drag, a skilled belayer, and a dynamic rope take care of most issues. A properly built belay anchor can be helpful though.

I wasn't climbing a lot of sport, but I pulled a number of quick redpoints and an onsight or two. I'm 6'2 and at that time weighed around 175 lbs. from an old thread:
Steve Townsend wrote: my friend Sonnie had the coolest diet when we were travelling and climbing last year. he would eat one bag of Oreo's, one bag of Dorito's, and one Pint of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream per day. also, when we were in the VRG he would have Buffet breakfast and Dinner many days too, and still sent many 5.14's and 13's!! ha ha. oh, also once in Rifle i saw a guy eat a pound of gummie bears before he sent his project (also a 5.14). i used to be anorexic and as soon as i started eating much more, yes i gained a few pounds (10 pounds or so), but also started climbing way way better and improving rapidly. i used to be 145 lbs and 6'4, now i'm still 6'4 but 165lbs and now that i eat alot more, i have way more energy then when i didn't eat much at all. as for supliments, nothing. just eat right and you'll have ton's of energy and won't need them. many of the best climbers i know eat TON'S and don't take any supliments (and never did). look at Dave Graham, he is like 80 lbs, ha, and can out eat most 200 lbs football players!! ha.

I've been a climbing instructor and take 300 lbs people climbing on 5.4 slab routes and had a blast. There's plenty of easier climbs accessable to someone who wouldn't think that they can climb. Have fun! GT

Other tips? My partners all outweigh me by a significant amount. The person I climb with most often is considered skinny at 6ft and 150-160 lbs. Is he a "Bigger climber"? For me he is since I weigh 95-98 lbs. For my partner, this always means a soft catch because I expect to be pulled up to at least the first clip. In our case, we expect and try to minimize any collision. He watches for me as I'm going up towards/past him and my part is to duck away. One time, he spread his legs and I went through the middle with my head turned away so the result was more a glancing blow between my neck/shoulder and his butt. On a few occasions outside, we had the option of anchoring me to something. But this is not the usual case. Other partners that outweigh me and aren't consious of the potential consequence to their fall from low clips just fall and hit me (if I can't dodge enough). I've thought about actually trying to practice dynamic belays with people more my size but it's not that urgent since everybody outweighs me anyway.

Certainly not at your height. Of course large-framed people can climb. But if you take rc.com to be a snapshot of the regular-folk climbing community (and I do), just look up any sundry "zomg how fat RU how hard u climm?" thread and you'll see that the bigger responders just don't crank as hard. Blah blah, but they have a lot of fun. Disclaimer given. The biggest (as in beefy, not obese) guys I know are 5'10 and 6'0, both about 185-190. They climb 5.11+, could work 12-, crack or face. The even bigger ones... well, not so much, earnest effort aside. This is not a coincidence, though it is my anecdote. That said, being a half-light-flyweight doesn't mean shit either. I'm very small (5'3 and 97 lbs if constipated and clothed) and plateau at mid-11. Anything harder takes more effort than my scrawny ass feels like giving.

I am 195lbs my wife is 105lbs she has been holding me when I fall for 8+ years. If you belay correctly size/weight does not matter. most little guys are to pussy to become big guys Once the little guy packs on a little weight some big guy ends up carrying his pack for him anyways just trying to fan the fire!
