NOt sure if it qualifies as western PA, but is Hunters out by State College any good? Any access issues to be aware of? I am probably gonna be at state College for Arts Fest this weekend but want to get some bouldering in. Any input would be appreciated.

If theres anything worth while there, it would make Thanksgiving at the grandparents a bit more tolerable.

Looking for a partner to climb outdoors this weekend 8/16-17. Birdsboro would be cool, or High Rocks. Gunks would be awesome. Hit me up if you're interested! Neil

Hey, Hunters is awesome. Lots and lots problems on yummy sandstone. The link to this area has allot of the routes and topos. There is a small access issue with Hunters. While most of the ridge hunters is on is public land, a small highly developed area is on private land. The owner as repeatedly asked climber not to climb there and has posted the area. Other than that, have fun!

Has anyone climbed at Rim Rock? I was thinking about driving up there to do some trad climbing. Also, I keep hearing rumors about a quarry near Meadville, does anyone know anything about it? Thanks for the info!

I have talked to climbers from meadville and they hunted to no avail for the quarry in meadville. That doesn't mean it isn't there but I couldn't find it. I think the routes db. has some info on rimrock. I think it is mostly toproping but of course you can lead anything you can protect. So I guess I'm no help. Have fun.

I climbed at the quarry there back in the 70s with Eric Guerrin who originally developed it. It was fairly limited but there were a handful of hard classic routes. To the best of my rapidly aging memory it is on private property and there may be access problems there nowdays. Rim Rock is so so but the blocks below have great bouldering potential. There are far better areas in the anf that are unpublicized. Better rock quality than the well known areas with bouldering, TR and sport. Check out http://www.flyingnutmuncher.com/ for some shots and videos from the locals up there.

Heres a plug for McConnell's Mills. It has dried out, and there are some big burly climbs. I had a lot of fun the last couple times I was there.

Climbed today with He whose name must not be mentioned in the place that connot be mentioned either. What a gorgeous day, sunny, warm, but not too much. Heard that all the bolts at Woodland were chopped. May God give old man Greer the reward he deserves.

Again, I climbed today with he whose name must not be mentioned in the place that cannot be mentioned either. However, there was also a very wise climber along. Another gorgeous day, sunny, warm, but not too much. Perfect in every way.

Perhaps "he whose name cannot be mentioned" and the place of a similar name are really code for "had a good day climbing but can't remember the names because I'm old." But not a chance. mountainman and joe are two of the most competent climbers around, of any age. It's always fun to climb with them, especially new (at least to us) routes! And the view...what a day. Edited to say: my mistake. I assumed joeforte was the joe mountainman and I were with on wednesday.

Hey, Does anyone know if there is good climbing in ohiopyle state park? In the route descriptions it says there are some but its kinda vague about the quality. I'm looking specifically for bouldering. Thanks!! Matt

Beautiful weekend at the New. On Saturday Jan the Slovakian took a headfirst 40 footer off the top of Premarital Bliss at Fern Point. Easily one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. Somehow his head missed the ledge, and good thing his piece held. Other than that, terrific weekend. Yesterday at the lake I really wished I had some swim trunks, but got in some really nice climbs at the Long Wall. Great weekend with great Pittsburghers in abundance.

Dunno Charley but check your email...had the DCNR in from H-burg today and we went out to the projects as an education...of course some moron had recently padlocked a dayglow orange chain to a tree as an anchor on the first mellow slab when you go in...did not sit well with the park management etc either...

That really sucks about the chain. I don't know why some ppl can't stay away from rock that is closed to climbing. I don't believe access will ever be gained to a place when assholes continue to climb there illegally. Some folks are plain stupid. Anyone on here have any idea who might have put a chain on a tree up there. What do you think about that kind of behavior.

Well they didn't seem too bent that there was some chalk on some of the routes ..park management knows the area gets a bit of traffic but its pretty low volume, thus low impact...not going to get gestapo over that and things were pretty cordial till we all saw that screaming orange chain up there..the padlock of course cinched it.

After a 10 mile bike ride, I went to the mill yesterday evening and had a great time climbing til exhaustion. The rock is as good as it gets. I also saw a group of friends who were leaving as I got there. This is a great time of the year for climbing so get out there and have fun.
