Im getting ready to buy my first boot i have found several in my price range and also in the beginner cat. but i dont know how to fit them i live in illinois and do not live near a store where i can physically try boots on. i wear a 12-12.5 EE in my walking shoes and most boots, how should i choose my boot size to match my foot?? i found a pretty good price/deal on the Scarpa Inverno but again i really dont know what size i would be. Can anyone help, i know i should buy a boot in person not over the internet but saving money and trainning near home is easier than lets say heading to Colorado and signing up for a clinic that would cost me tons of cash i dont have...

ice boots are all different and you need to try them with two sets of socks and walk with them before buying them off websites.

I had a pair of Scarpa's a few years ago.
I also am a size 12 normally...
I believe the Scarpa's were 11.5.
My LaSportiva's I have now are also 11.5.
At least for me the boots seem to be a 1/2
size down from normal.

If your only option is to order from somewhere,
find out their return policy. You might have to
pay for shipping a few times but such is life.
You want a boot that is a good fit...

Just a heads up. I had the Inverno's. I had
problems with the boot digging in to the top
of my foot. Very uncomfortable especially after
a few days. I have a full, thick, and wide foot.
My buddy had the same boots but not the same
problem. He has a much less voluminous foot.
So, you definitely want to try the boots on and have
the option to send it back.

your buying something that your crampons will be attached to, half of the system keeping you stuck in a piece of ice as large as several school buses stacked end to end.

you want to try them on before you buy.

or order three pairs in sequential sizes then return the ones that don't fit.

I had the same problem... Needed boots and no where to even look at them. Determine your size as best as you can. Order that size and check fit when they arrive. I ended up returning two pairs then got the got it right on the third. It's a pain I know, but still cheaper than driving to the nearest metro area.
As long as your credit card can handle the run up you're good to go. I have also done this with pants, jackets etc.

If you must get them online, Zappos has free shipping both ways (ordering and returns). They don't have the selection that a dedicated mountaineering store would, but they carry Scarpa, La Sportiva, Vasque, etc.

I'm just sayin'...

take a drive one weekend and hit up MooseJaw in Michigan
http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/content_find-a-shop_10208_10000001_-1

or REI in Illinois
http://www.rei.com/FindStores?state=IL&radius=900

Both have ice boots from various vendors.
