Hi

I'm fairly new climber, I'm curious to know what are considered some of the better or classic climbing dvds / video tapes out there?

I'd like to pick some up, I'm assuming there must be at least several everyone's seen and considers must see.

Something even with just climbing and music is fine by me I just want to see great climbers climb to enjoy and help me learn.

thanks

Personally. Some of the newer films are great, such as Dosage 3,4,+ 5. First Ascent, King lines (mostly Sharma), Sharp End.

Mostly bouldering: Best of the West, The Road, Frequent Fliers.

Great ol' classic is: Masters of Stone 5. some sweet climbing, some scary solos, and a couple REALLY Nutty rope swings.

Now maybe IF anyone seconds any of my picks, then you can snag them.

The first two I ever liked were Return 2 Sender and First Ascent. Some other ones I hear about a lot but have never seen are King Lines and the Dosage series. Commited Volume II just came out and is partly about what may be the worlds hardest climb over in England. Hard Grit is another one about the climbing in England. Kind of boring but it does have some sick ascents. The Sharp End just came out. I've read some bad reviews but I thought it was a pretty sick video. It has great piece on the climbing in the Czech Republic and a bunch of base jumping stuff.

I like videos that are either about cool places I've been or climbers that I know or like (preferably climbers that we don't hear much about).

That being said... most climbing videos kind of suck. Snowboarding vids have better music... and sometimes the "send" isn't really a send at all! Just wait until you see a climb that you have actually been on and you notice how they skip the crux! Then you meet the climber who faked the send! Can't do that in a snowboarding video.

I also like kayaking vids... those guys are nuts.

as far as classic goes, the master of stone series has great old school climbers crankin hard along with some good history of the climbs they do. also rampage might be considered kind of a classic.

but the newer films i like are the newer dosage volumes. the sharp end. some of the momentum videos. autoroute. first ascent.

My two favourite climbing DVDs are Return 2 Sender and First Ascent, but this is probably because I'm primarily a trad climber.

The Dosage Series has footage of some amazing bouldering and sport climbs from some of the strongest climbers in the world, and are always worth watching too.
Uncommon Ground probably rounds out my favorites list.

Uncommon Ground is great. Best of the West is pretty good. Masters of Stone 5 is classicfor sure, if you can stomach the commentary which is 88% retarded. All the ones the had Dave Graham Joe Kinder and Luke Paraday when they were like 16 are pretty comical. Paradays parts are great. Check em out

Return 2 Sender is pretty educational, Sender films and BigUp films like sharp end and the dosage collection are all great films...if you get into alpine or are takin interest i would recommend Spilter a rockumentary its a great film about pakistan alpine, You might look up Chessler Books online they have tons for cheap, while your there check out The North Face Expeditions 3 disc box set. Jarod ogden on great trango towers and beth roddon on first big wall in madagascar... everst and skiing high peaks all great!

Uncommon Ground was my hands down favorite climbing vid up until recently when it became tied with On-Sight. Dosage 4 & 5 and King Lines are distant runner ups.

Personally I think First Ascent and The Sharp End are half amazing, half steaming piles. Mortimer is so close, yet so far away from making the greatest climbing movie ever.

Master of Stone 2 is a classic... also my favourite DVD for sure. So much climbing porn with a great sound track and some insane dudes (Osman, Kauk, and crazy aid guy?) doing insane things.. can't ask for much more. Can watch it over and over again..

Frequent Flyers... all bouldering.. 6/10.. they go to NZ!.. another one you can watch more than once

King Lines... sharma... hes great to watch Smile some replay value

Sharp End... Pretty good, worth watching and maybe even buying

Return to Sender... my least favourite DVD

Front Range Freaks... good collection of stuff and great story of Derek Hersey

I'm a huge fan of "southern slopers". It's a VHS-only telling of some of the early problems at HP40, being sent by local heroes. It's not a bunch of big flashy sponsored climbers, just locals pulling down hard.

The only place I've ever seen it for sale was at the camp store at HP40. I wish they sold a DVD version, as I don't own a VCR.

I vote for Try Hard by Noah Kaufman. My favorite climbing video until my bitch of a dog destroyed the VHS... Second favorite is hands down First Ascent.

wow thanks so much great help!

I already picked up king lines, dosage 4 and 5 and got more coming. Great stuff!

Now if I can just find one featuring lots of hot women climbers maybe I can get my friend, scared of heights, to finally start climbing Angelic

You know, I'm actually surprised this hasn't been done. I mean we've all seen the stone nudes calendars, but I'd love to have a good two hours of hotties in sports bras and bikinis climbing. But not just some good looking chick on a V2, I want mega-babes crushing mega-hard problems.

I guess most of the "serious" female climbers don't want to cheapen themselves, or some such nonsense. But even so, I'm sure they could at least find plenty of hotties in the V7ish range who would be fine with climbing in lingerie.

Hell, have Misty put a bag over her head and wear those latex pants, and I'll even let her be in the video. As long as she doesn't try to provide the soundtrack.

Not nearly gratuitous enough.

I'm thinking more along the lines of chicks in thongs climbing, using giant pools of jello instead of crash pads.

Ok, maybe not jello...

chocolate pudding instead?
