I'm considering studying abroad for a semester in Christchurch. How good is the climbing/community in Christchurch, and how much of the country will I really get to see with Christchurch as a home base?

If you have to live in a city in NZ Chch is a good one.
1 hr to world class bouldering.
Good gyms for winter nights/rainy days
Outside climbing in city for after work in summer.
Mt Somers is Awesome and about an hour away if you like trad.
Take a road trip to Paynes for limestone cragging Milford for mountain rock.
Also good mountain biking, kayaking, skiing nearby.

My good friend just got back from there; said it was the time of his life. Castle Hill is the big draw, 1 hour, plus a shitload of other crags. He managed to see tons of the South Island during breaks and long weekends. It's easy/not too pricey to rent a car there. He said the climbing community at Canterbury Uni is awesome, and the school itself is really easy so there's more time for climbing. Do it. I've seen the pictures. It looks amazing.

I was in Chch last month for a week and a bit. The Roxx is a nice gym and they were super helpful on finding local crags, they're also relaxed about belay test and things like that (a personal pet peeve).
The Mount Pleasant, Britten and the Cave (don't remember the name, it's basically the center of 5.14 climbing in Chch) crags are super easy to get to by public transit (mind the sheep poo on the walk in though).
Make sure you bring all the gear you'll need, stuff there is 3x the price .
