George Ullrich, that young Brit climber who had the audacity to attempt the Bachar-Yerian without bolts - he nearly made it - falling off the Johnny Dawes' masterpiece, Gaia. Filmed by Dave Gill of SteepMedia. Worth a watch: http://www.ukclimbing.com/...les/page.php?id=1542 You won't be disappointed. Video at bottom of the article, view it largo and the music is ace, 'Sincerely, Jane' by Janelle Monáe. Mick

Ooff... semi good idea with the other rope to prevent the leg snapping fall against the other arete butttt you get that instead. woulda been a sick flash though edit: the above a angle definitely new and cool. He wasn't even to the really sketchy traverse move.. that was only the semi sketch traverse move ;)

The "other" rope wasn't the rope that flipped him, correct?? But it was the rope that got in his way on the climb, right? just checking.

Just watched it again... you're correct.. he had the main rope behind his leg on the fall and it flipped him not really the route to be getting flustered on. gotta be thinking you're solid on that shit.

It seems to me that he was so concerned about the rope on his right not catching his right leg, that he couldn't avoid the rope on his left catching his left leg... That's a scaaaaaaryyyy route. I guess everyone has seen the video of the other dude smashing his leg against the arete.

Ouch, that looks like it really had to hurt a lot. Looks like he was having trouble moving around at the end. It definitely looks like his leg got caught on the leader rope. I'm guessing the other rope was going to be pulled tight when he fell. Probably to keep him from swinging into the wall at the base of the route. The one that the crash pad was laid against.

Awsome video. Thanks. Alex chalks up a bunch in the dihedral then heads out onto the face ( right foot a little shaky ) chalks up on the slopers. Figures out his feet and nails the mantel. Sweet climb Alex!

Wow! Glad to see that he was mostly okay after that fall. Its also good to know that even the pros have "Okay- now what?!?!" moments too.

I guess wearing a helmet when a huge swinging fall like that is possible is "planning to fail" and so has no place. But still, if he'd bonked his noggin on the arete...

(19 times in four minutes of video -- could be a new record!)

Watch the video "Hard grit fall off gaia" or something like that. The backrope is to stop the swing seen in that video.

And he had to keep going because he's barely balanced on a small bit of slab with no real holds.. it's up or down.. he's taking that fall no matter what so he might as well go for it. And i dunno how you feel about downclimbing .13ish with no holds and hardly any pro.. but no thanks
