I'm with bhickey, I wouldn't use a kneepad. But I see nothing rong with a youngin' like yourself using one. Wouldn't want to damage growing bits.

When you are on a totally horizontal route, and you have to do a kneebar behind a little edge, you will want whatever you can to make it feel better.

Maybe if you totally need it, but to someone who is just learning how to use them, I'd suggest starting out without one - know what I mean?

Makes the climbs feel a lot more doable.

Tricks for a good kneebar. 1. Make sure you have a good foot for your other foot. The position of that foot is probably the most important thing to how good your kneebar feels. All your weight is on it, and the kneebar holds you into the wall. 2. Almost always best to keep 1 hand on a hold and alternate to shake out. Not a lot of weight on this but you are trying to use this to not blow out your core muscles. 3. Try different postitions, if its steep it probably needs to be on your thigh and not right on your knee. If it isn't so steep you can usually do alright with right on the tip of your knee. Try differnet angles with your lower leg too, horizontal often works better then vertical. 4. If you are doing it outside on hard routes that are usually done with a kneepad you should get a kneepad unless you want the climb to feel many grades harder then the rating. Also your legs are going to get thrashed after 5 attempts on a route with 8 kneebars if you don't use pads.

jensk wrote: Do any american websites sell the stick rubber kneepads? It would probably be easiest to make one! Get a neoprene knee pad. It should be tight so it won't slide off. If it is lose it is best to duct tape it to yourself. Go to your local resole shop and get a resole kit. Glue the resole kit on the upper half of the kneepad. Take a dremel tool and round off the edges. That would make an easy knee bar pad. ~Wolfgang
