So, at the gym yesterday, I was talking to some dude who wanted to learn to aid climb, and was theorizing about the best way to learn.

I told him that the best way to learn to aid climb was to be a really shitty trad climber.

discuss.

That does sound like a great way to learn to aid climb, Another good response would be to sport climb on gear. What I mean by this is to do a trad route that is way above your ability level, hang dog your way up it, and make sure to take after every move. (I can tell you from experiance that this is good practice for aiding.

Anyone who's ever 'worked' a sport route is an aid climber. Since that is the standard method sport climbers use to feign free climbing I'd say taking up sport climbing is the fastest way to aid.

Or gym climb. More hanging on the rope there than just about any other climbing pursuit.

Tell him to get on some hard trad, and when he gets to a crux, just place gear high and pull - it will aid you past anythang.

It seems totally possible to be a really shitty trad climber and never hang on the rope or pull on gear.

Worked for me.

Having too much money, too few friends, and a gear fetish helps as well.
