Hey Im considering going to UGA for law school and I was wondering what the climbing scene is like there. I know Atlanta has like 15 gyms, but is there a pretty good scene in Athens also? I love all types of climbing but trad is my favorite. Any climbers on here from Athens? thanks Ben

Check out Rock Town and Mount Yonah for two good areas within 3 hours. I usually just head up to an indoor gym called Adrenaline Climbing. It's only about a 30 minute drive and has really good climbing.

I am from Athens, so I will give you the scoop. There is a pretty good crew of people who climb at the school wall, and there is great climbing within a reasonable distance depending on what you are into. If you are into trad then you have tallulah, yonah, looking glass and everything else in north carolina (Whitesides, Laurel Knob, etc.) within 3 hours. There are a handful of 5.10 and up sport climbs at Curahee mountain about an hour away, and fosters and sandrock are about 4 hours away. As far as bouldering goes there is shaking rock about 20 minutes away, which is small and contains a few really good lines, but if you want good bouldering rocktown, looking glass, yonah, boat rock, and others are within a three hour drive. Thats about it. Go Dawgs and whatnot.

I am from Clemson (obviously), and I will agree with the Yonah, Tallulah, and Curahee being pretty good places. For the small size, Curahee has a good amount of variety and lot of mixed gear routes that are easily led. Many sport areas there as well. Yonah could use a little more warmth to be good, because the upper areas have a tendency to freeze and run. Tallulah is great right now, but has a lot less moderate climbs. Out of the Atl gyms, I definitely prefer Adrenaline and we always stop in there if we are at the REI. Cool employees and a huge variety of walls. Your not very far from all the N.C. trad, which is probably one of the best in the Southeast. Don't forget to check out the Southeastern Climbing Coalition boards. A lot of cool people on there into pretty much everything.

Active climbing sure you'll be the only person there or one of the few that climb in athens. Go to the university. They have a wall there. As far as Adrenaline. Yup for a gym in the southeast it cant be beat. The walls are changed every 3 months. And when they change the routes they pressure wash all the holds. I have washed my share of holds. The staff is helpful and the climbers there don't have a elitist attitude. A nice bunch of folks having a good time. Pushing each other to better there selfs....

For a good survey check out the Dixie Cragger's Atlas. It has a pretty good survey of areas near athens.

I live in Athens and climb (in a house with two other climbers). UGA has it's own wall, which is good, but check the above link for the new gym opening up. I know the owners, been to the gym to see it's progress, and it's going to be really incredible when it's finished. Climbing scene is great, Athens as a town is awesome, and of course UGA is a great school. Some really awesome crags all within 3 hours, and offering everything from bouldering to sport to trad. You can't go wrong here
