One of my climbing partners has set a goal of hitting some of the 8,000 meter peaks. This is years down the road, but I know she needs to start training now.

Are there any books on training for the big peaks, or websites with info on it, I found a little on google searches, but could use any info.

The book would actually be best because I would like to get it for her as a gift.

The best way to train for 8000 m peaks is to climb lots of 6000 and 7000 meter peaks.

Two of the books from The Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series are your best bet: Climbing: Training for Peak Performance and Climbing: Expedition Planning.

I might add that, due to the Bush admin's careless attitude toward pissing off Muslim nations over the last 6 years, your friend can pretty much kiss off the idea of climbing in the Karakorum....which has the "easy" 8,000 meter peaks like Broad peak. Unless of course she assumes that the likelihood of being shot by AK47 is a reasonable part of the risk profile of doing big peaks.

Huh? Lots of expeditions go up the Baltoro every season without any problems. Care to backup your claim with any actual reports of trouble in the past few years? Walking around unescorted in some parts of Rawalpindi might not be a great idea but there are parts of LA, NYC, etc I wouldn't recommend either.

And my regular alpine partner just got a climbing visa for Mount Damavand in Iran for this summer.

check out Extreme Alpinism: Climbing Light, Fast, & High, by Mark Twight. It has a good training section.
