Is there any difference between the two, other than one is velcro and one is lace up? Is one stiffer than the other, or something like that? Thanks, Jay

The lace version is significantly stiffer. It has a full length midsole and a second half midsole. The velcro has a single 3/4 length midsole. Basically, the velcro feels more "supple" and softer fitting, and isn't the edging specialist the lace version is. If you're a bigger person/need the support, or you do a lot of thin dead vertical/slightly overhanging climbing the lace makes sense.

The laceup version is stiffer. I've used the velcro version of the pontas, its an awesome shoe. The velcro version is a little bit softer, so I find them great for overhangs and bouldering.

Last summer I debated between the two versions of the Pontas. I was leaning towards the velcro version as a replacement for my beloved Kaoses. I found several reviews complaining of "sloppiness" with the velcro model after break in so I went with the laceups. Despite their relative stiffness the Pontas laceup is the best shoe I've ever owned (around a dozen different models). They work well on just about everything except severly overhanging routes/problems. d.

In addition to the lace-ups being stiffer they also have a tighter fitting heel box

I got a pair of velcro's (no lace ups sold where I got them) Only problem is I nearly use all the velcro to do them up. Shoe is a real tight fit but length wise they are correct for my feet. I love the rubber on mine

According to the 2008 Rock and Ice Gear guide. The Pontas are listed as a soft shoe. and the Lace ups are listed as a stiff shoe.

Do you have to size them differently?

I've got both velcro and lace ups in the same size, but actually find the laceup more roomy since you can adjust the laces right down to the toe..same sizing but since one is lace up, it has a more versitile fit. To be dead honest..since I picked up my lace ups I haven't really touched the velcro ones at all. I find pretty much anything the velcro can do, the laceup does the same but feels more comfortable or secure... I guess the question to you is.. what are you planning to use it for primarily? If you're bouldering, go velcro..the on/off ease, and flexibility lend themselves to bouldering more (though I would recommend a more downturned shoe personally), but if you doing routes, Lace up all the way! Good Hunting!
